I've installed GFI Languard 9 (build 20090709) on a new Win 2003 Server machine with SQL 2005 Express.  I tried changing the Database from the default Access database to SQL through the "Modify default settings" page.

I choose to use NT authority (my account and the GFI service account are local admins on the server, therefor also admins on SQL) and I received the error "failed to connect to database"

I then tried SQL credentials, after following the instructions on this page to enable the sa account
http://kbase.gfi.com/showarticle.asp?id=KBID002804

I restarted SQL and GFI and I still receive the error "failed to connect to database"

What else can I do to get GFI to use SQL instead of Access?

Have you tried using SQL authentication and using the SA account for trouble shooting purposes?

Yes I have tried the SA account.

Does the GFI Languard database already exist on the SQL server? Is this a new install where the database should be empty? If so, try deleting it and using the SA password letting our application create it again.

These are the only databases on the machine.  They are the defaults, correct?

master
model
msdbdata
mssqlsystemresource
templog

Is SQL installed locally on the GFI Languard server?

Are you using SQL Express? If so, try using:
Servername: SQLSERVERNAME\SQLEXPRESS
