I've had this problem for a while: my archive mailbox is growing (currently at 31,000 messages); occasionally it dips for a while. I've changed the mail collection to IMAP, but it makes no difference, and deleted the last few messages in the archive (in case they're corrupted). MailArchive 6.1, build 20090511, Windows 2003 Standard 64 bit, fully up to date. Firebird used as database

How big is your current firebird database? Have a look at http://kbase.gfi.com/showarticle.asp?id=KBID003571 under the section 'GFI MailArchiver (Firebird) Database' near the end of the document. We had a similar problem (that may or may not be related) after we upgraded to 6.1 and found we had to switch from having 2 months per database to 1 month (we ended up creating a new database and that allowed the outstanding email backlog to be archived).

Thanks for your response: GFI don't seem to be answering my emails so the forum is my only way of sorting this out. I've checked the mail store statistics, and it's only 625MB.

using the tech support form? the following page has a box on the right advising a route if dissatisified with support: http://support.gfi.com/Support/supportrequest.aspx?lcode=en Unitl get this fixed, check that you don't have any mailbox size limits on your journal mailbox (to avoid losing any emails). Anything that you're aware of that's changed recently that could have made it stop working? Also check windows event logs. Sounds like you'll need to start GFI Mail archiver in debug mode then look through the debug logs for any errors and then report them back (suggest remove any existing *.log files out of the various debuglogs folders first to avoid looking at old debug logs). How can I enable or disable debug logging in GFI MailArchiver? http://kbase.gfi.com/showarticle.asp?id=KBID002919 Leave it running in debug mode for about 10 minutes, then disable debug mode (to stop it running too slow) then look through the files in the debuglogs folders. Sometimes just changing it to debug mode (leave for 2 minutes) then non debug mode can reset things enough to get mail flowing again - if not at least will have some logs to work with.

Thanks. Local tech support aren't all that quick: however, they did suggest that I create a new archive, and that went OK for a while, and has reached 250MB database size and the same problem has returned. Any suggestions about which log files to look in? There's loads of them. It would be great if they could be centralised and pruned down in number.

what are the hardware specifications of the machine it is on, including how many disk drives and which disks the different GFI elements are stored (programs, indexes, databases, binary files) ? The debug logs under the Core, Store and Search folders would be first ones to look through, and anywhere where it says 'error' or 'timeout'. Are you able to look at the journal mailbox? are there any strange looking messages near the top (sorted by date received descending)?

Thanks for your efforts on this. Dell PowerEdge 2950,Quad-Core Intel Xeon E5345, 4GB RAM Windows 2003 x64 Server, standard edition 4 drives, all RAID 5, Exchange 2007 SP3 C: drive: GFI program, 40GB free D: drive, indexes, databases, binaries, 20GB free Nothing obvious in the archive mailbox (assuming you mean look at the oldest messages). I shall check out the debug logs in the locations you suggest. When I put GFI into debug mode I get the following message by mail: GFI MailArchiver failed to transfer the archived emails into the backend database. The following error message was reported: An error occurred while processing the request on the server: System.Threading.ThreadAbortException: Thread was being aborted. at System.Runtime.Remoting.Channels.BinaryServerFormatterSink.ProcessMessage(IServerChannelSinkStack sinkStack, IMessage requestMsg, ITransportHeaders requestHeaders, Stream requestStream, IMessage& responseMsg, ITransportHeaders& responseHeaders, Stream& responseStream) at System.Runtime.Remoting.Channels.Ipc.IpcServerTransportSink.ServiceRequest(Object state)

In the debug log message you posted that looks like the one from when you shutdown GFI and can be ignored (you get a few errors at the end of the debug logs as you shut gfi down to go back into non debug mode). Have you always had this problem or has it just recently started? Has anything changed that you're aware of if so?

I think it's been sorted now; Oz tech support suggested I try archiving to a SQL Server 2005 Express database. It seems to have done the trick; it certainly archives a lot faster. Is there any problem with this approach if you're aware of the 4GB database limit? Also wondering why they used Firebird rather than something like mysql for the base option. The Firebird version GFI used also appeared to be a bit old.

Glad to hear it, are you storing the binary files in SQL also (SQL+NTFS), this can keep the DB size down (but can't enable GFI auditing). Not heard of any problems aside from the size limit. We've moving to SQL Server soon for performance reasons.
