Every now and then people ask me about what this service does, or what that one does, here is something I happened across today in one of the blogs I'm on. I wish MS had a bit more info on each service, such as what port numbers it opened when it was running if any, but it is a start:
Glossary of Win2K Services http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/techinfo/howitworks/management/w2kservices.asp {Summary of Win2K services} This article summarizes roughly 100 services in the Windows 2000 Server family of operating systems. It provides general information on how each service is related to functioning of the operating system and describes the major effects of disabling each service. A service is a process or set of processes that adds functionality to Windows by providing support to other programs. The default installation of each version of Windows 2000 Server provides a core set of services and configurations designed to suit most needs, while offering users some flexibility. The article has a Word document available for downloading. [Meryl]
