I just downloaded and started using GFI. I started backing up my 40GB worth of files at 4:00 this morning. As of 5:45 pm, it's only 15% done. Is this normal? I am doing a backup, not a sync, however I am backing up to a drive that already has all of this data backed up on it, with the exception of a few changes. Is it normal for it to take this long?

Hi tsheridan. There's something that I don't understand. You say that you've just downloaded GFI Backup and then you started a new backup, but then you say that you already have most of the data already backed up. I assume that you didn't use GFI Backup to backup that data, so you cannot expect that GFI Backup will see that old backup made with another program and just add the new files. It would be nice to know more about your backup task, if you have a slower computer and you are using ZIP compression and you backup to an external hard drive using an USB 1.1 port, then it will take a long time. Please send me your GBT file. You can find more on how to do that here. If the backup has finished, you can include the LOG file too. If not, please tell me if the backup seems to slowly progress or if it hanged at 15%.

I wasn't sure if GFI would back up over an existing backup, like you mentioned, so I formatted the destination drive and attempted to back up today again. After 10 hours, it still was only 4% complete. My computer is a brand new quad core....not even out of the box a week. It is running Vista 64 bit, and is not compatible with my old backup software, which I why I downloaded GFI. Even though the software runs and I can configure it no problem, could it still be a compatibility issue? I don't know if it just hanging up, or still progressing, but yesterday when it said it was 15% done, it did say that it still had 74 hours to go! Any suggestions would really be appreciated. Thanks!

tsheridan, please do another backup task with the same settings as your normal task (the one that takes too long). Choose files from the same location, select the same options (compression, backup type, etc), and select the same location for the destination of the backup, but in the source select only a few files (about 100 Mb should be fine). Run this test task, then send me the GBT and LOG files of this test task, and alos the GBT file of the original task (that has 40 GB in source and takes a long time). You can find out how to send files here.

Hi Theresa. From the LOG files, it seems that the transfer speed of the files is very low. I saw that your destination drive is E:. I assume that's an external hard drive that has a slow link with the computer or it's just defective. Anyway, please try to copy some files from C:, then paste them directly to E:. Do this operation directlly from the operating system, using Windows Explorer. Check how long it takes to copy a few MB.

I keep my data on an external drive (K) and back up to another external drive. This is the same configuration I've had for years, however I have upgraded the drive. The destination drive is only about a year old. I copied and pasted 300MB of data from my K drive to the E drive in about 30 seconds. These are the same drives I was using several weeks ago, prior to switching from my laptop to the new quad core. And, because I currently don't have a backup on my desktop, I plug both drives into my laptop and back up from there with the old software I was using (which unfortunately isn't compatible with Vista 64 bit).

Hi again Theresa. From what I understand so far, you have 2 external hard drive connected to your computer (K: and E:). If you copy some files from K: to E: it's OK, but if you have a backup task that copy files from K: to E:, the speed is very low. Normally, that shouldn't happen, because GFI Backup uses basic system calls to copy files for simple, uncompressed backup task. In other words, you should have the same speed as a copy and paste operation in Windows Explorer. Are you using an administrator account or a limited account ? Do you have all rights for those drives (K:, E:). Right click on a drive (K:), click Properties, then go to the Security tab. Check the rights for your account. Repeat this operation for E:. Also, it would be interesting to see the transfer speed for a task that uses the same hard drive as source and destination. For example, make 3 backup test tasks : one that copies files from a folder from C: to another empty folder from C:, the second one does the same thing for E:, and the latest task copies from K: to K:.
