Why must I enter a UNC path for a program that I want to excecute when the monitor fails. Doesn't it make sense that the computer doing the monitoring would have the program installed? Many programs now have a bunch of dependent files and registry entries so running the program remotely with a UNC path won't work.

I could see if the program executed on the remote computer, but it does not. It executes on the local computer after being called over the network.

Examples

1. If I have PC1 and PC2 were PC1 is the monitor. PC2 fails a ping and I need to run a command to restart PC2. If the path is UNC and NM requires a UNC path it is assumed that you are calling the program on PC2. But wait... How do you call a program on a remote PC. [Eek!]

2. SERVICE_1 fails on PC2 and you need to restart it. PC1 does not have SERVICE_1 installed so "\\PC2\C$\Windows\System32\Net Stop SERVICE_1" will return an error because SERVICE_1 is not installed on PC1. [Eek!]

3. You install a program on PC2 that you are going to call when PC1 senses a failure. The program on PC2 has DLL installed in the system 32 directory and its configurations are in the registry. Calling \\PC2\ShareName\Path\Program.EXE from PC1 will only generate an error. [Confused]

Again, I could see if the programs being called on PC2 would execute on PC2, but that is not happening. So what is the sense of a UNC path?

Jordan,

Currently the way that GFI Network Server Monitor is implemented requires the user to use UNC paths when executing a program when the rule fails. You can easily call an application on the local machine using administrative shares (e.g. \\127.0.0.1\C$\...)

The use of UNC paths should be removed in the next version of GFI Network Server Monitor.

If you would like to execute programs and commands on a remote machine, you can make use of a utility from www.sysinternals.com called psexec.
