Hi,

I installed SP4 manually on a good few servers/ pc's. So, I thought, great, lets roll it out on a few pc's.

I pushed out SP4 onto two w2k pro pc's using LNSS 3.2. Both pc's were working perfectly.

Rebooted them, now, one keeps rebooting itself contineously, while the other now says 'inaccessable boot device'. Any ideas as to why this has happened ?

SP4 install gone bad....

LNSS is just scheduling it as a task, so I doubt it has anything to do with LNSS. I've pushed it to 25-50 machines now with no problems.

As for the one that reboots continually:
where does it get to when it boots? Will it boot safe mode or last known good boot?

As for the 'inaccessable boot device' one, what stop code does it give you?

Other things, is the SP4 that you pushed the same one that you had been using? Or was it a fresh download? I know we have seen one issue in the past where someone was pushing a hotfix that had a CRC error in it, didn't cause issues to the extent you are talking about, but was causing him problems until he did a clean download of the file.

Unfortunetly, as I do not have the resources (ie, spare PC's), I have had to re-install the PC's again, so I can't tell you the error codes for the "inaccessable boot device".

The "contineous boot PC" got to the end of the startup/boot up progress bar and rebooted. It doesnt boot up in safe mode either.

One thing tho, this SP4 was dloaded the day of release. Could be a bad crc, however, it works on a manual install.

I can try dloading it again, but Im slightly in fear of trying to push it out again due to these errors. I almost pushed it out to 150+ pc's.... Can you imagine the fun if that happened and they all went wrong [Smile]

I'll set up a test PC and try again and let you know how I get on.

sounds good, like I said, I've pushed to 25+ so far, probably close to 50 with no issues, but as always, test, test, test... [Smile]

let me know what you find out on your next push.

Hi,
i had the same problem with one of my test clients. I've pushed the SP4 via GFI and it seems to be ok. But after approx. 30 min no activity on the task manager so I reboot the client. Mistake. Result like described above. Original W2k CD fixed the settings, but unfortunately Office settings where gone, too. So I#ve done several other tests. To keep is short my solution will be: One it's running, don't tuch let is run until it reboots by it self just a plain -q or /q

Will look into it a bit more, doing an image of one of the workstations right now, and will push SP4 to another one just like it in the morning.

I think it may be related to the -z and setting LNSS to tell it to reboot.

It appeared to be rebooting before the patch was completely installed.

This is VERY preliminary results. In my case I was able to boot all of the machines back up in Safe Mode, and remove SP4, and go back to SP3, all of the machines seemed to run fine after that, but I'll have to wait and see if the end users report any more errors.

Will pass whatever I find onto the development team.

Hiyahs,

Well, I did another couple of tests on similiarly build machines -
1st test, crashed as above
2nd test, didnt crash, however, I got this error - (
The ordinal 175 could not be located in the dynamic link libary vrevenv.dll) - could be misleading. I rebooted the machine and it came up. W2k reported it having sp4, but lss reported it as Sp3. I manually installed sp4 then and machine works fine.

Not alot more I can add accept heres the build on the machine -

w2k
sp3
ie 5.5 sp2
connected to a domain
at this point, i installed sp4

interesting. Thanks for the info.

I can't say one way or the other, from more testing on my end, one machine I push to with LNSS works fine, next doesn't. But then, one machine I install SP4 on by hand works fine, next doesn't....

So can't say one way or the other currently.

There seems to be a long list of problems with/about SP4, so as always, test it well in your enviornment. But for now, I'm not putting it on any more machines by hand or through pushes....

I've been able to find no results that make a lot of sense. For me at least, it appears to be an SP4 issue. I haven't had good luck at all with it on many of my machines total, so just as an update, can't say where the issue resides. But at this point, I'm waiting for SP4a to be released [Smile] or SP5 ..

What I've seen and can repeat on many Compaq Servers, is the GFI batch file is telling the ServicePack to "OVERWRITE OEM FILES" this is bad since most of the time the drivers on the service pack are old. Any way we can have this feature "BUG" turned off since a SERVER has it's own DRIVERS pack for hardware etc.

Which option is it that is telling it to overwrite OEM files? I'll look it up later if I don't get a response, but stuck in the middle of something else right now.

thanks

FYI, they are looking at removing the -o option for the SP4 deployment since that is what it making it overwrite the OEM files.

Thanks for the heads up on that. (Not sure on a time frame).

I can't get NSS to see that service pack 4 needs to be installed on the workstations. It sees the 2K Prof boxes as SP3, but the only SP4 it wants to push is for the servers. Any idea's on why it will not recognize that service pack 4 for 2K prof is not being seen as a needed push?
