Hi all,

We have identified a problem with one of our update servers. The ip address of the update server causing the issue is 64.62.172.18.

Since only one server is affected, you should still be getting the updates, be getting the issue infrequently.

We are currently addressing the issue with the update server.

I had well over 100 failures over the weekend.
I had 87 between Friday evening and sat. afternoon alone and have still not had a successful update since Thursday

If the problem is only on the server with I.P. address of 64.62.172.18 then my server must be hitting that one and only that one every single time. These failure emails are getting quite annoying.
Is there a way to make our servers hit a good one?

Well, it isn't fixed yet because its still failing for me too.  I have to admit that these frequent update service outages are really causing me to start to think twice about this product.  An anti-malware product such as this relies on getting good definitions as soon as they're available.  Having update server outages that last days is just not acceptable when we pay dearly for maintenance and access to those updates.

Agreed.
And this is a very common issue with GFI in my experience. May be time to start looking at other solutions and this happens quite frequently and with little response from GFI. This has been going on since at least Friday and the only thing I see from GFI is one post saying there is a problem.

Yes, I have to admit to getting rather fed up with this as well.

Update problems Friday, then sporadically over the weekend, then all morning today.

The only responses I've seen from GFI to this latest bout of update problems is to redirect me here from:
http://forums.gfi.com/m_900744542/mpage_10/key_/tm.htm#900749840
and admitting to there being a problem with one of their update servers.

This does not bode well for my continuing my subscription when it comes up for renewal.

Some sort of post about action from GFI would be appreciated, but ultimately an end to this recurring problem is what is needed.

GFI:
What is the status?

36 hours since they claimed they noticed it. (This has been happening since at least Friday.) Even if they did only notice it 36 hours ago why are they not letting us know what's going on!?!?!?
I have had over 200 failures now since Friday and I am getting sick of all these emails telling me it has failed!! Fix it PLEASE!

A couple of things stand out to me:

1. GFI obviously does not monitor each update server to make sure they are working.  It was only after posts here that they looked to see if there was a problem.

2. The MSEC program is poorly implemented when it comes to updates.  It seems to me that GFI is basically relying on having multiple A records for different update servers and goes on the premise that, when queried, eventually you'll get a lookup returned for a different server IP that is working and it will work at that point.  That's great, except it caches the DNS results and you don't have a chance at getting a different IP each time MSEC tries to update.  Rather, it should be coded into the program to randomly try a server from a list, and upon failure, try another one until it finds one that works.  You would have a much greater chance at getting updates even if you have a server that is on the blink.

Ultimately, I got tired of waiting for GFI to fix the issue so I just went into my DNS server and setup a forward lookup zone for the gfi.com domain and specified A records for the good update servers and left the bad one off the list, and I've been ok since, but I shouldn't have had to do that, and this issue should not have lasted past Friday night.  I would really urge GFI to rethink its update synchronization framework; it really does appear to be inadequate from where I stand.

would you mind telling me what you used for your A records so I can do the same? It appears to me you are right about GFI's setup and assumptions....

I am getting frustrated also, one full week of failures! and obviously it isn't MY setup ...

It seems we may have to do something regarding our support plans.
I have similar situation with another vendor, I started discounting the days without full service from the monthly fees.
Maybe GFI will react quicker when people don't renew or bail out to another service!

Day 5 and STILL NOTHING from GFI.
This is absolutely pathetic. Not even a simple post in here to tell us they're actually doing something.
I will not be renewing my subscription that is for sure. GFI Anti-Spam\Security is SPAMMING me with all these failure emails.
