Hi all, I'm testing the GFI NSS trial package. At the deploy custom patches I can't start this feature sucessfully. The user logged in to the GFI NSS manager has the admin privileges over the pc I want to update.
The deployment log sends the folowing error: Deployment log for MACHINE(172.22.58.44) Creating patch directory : \\MACHINE\\system32\Patches Unable to create patch directory. Using WinDir\System32 directory for patch storage! Copying patches to \\MACHINE\\system32 ... Copying patch O2kSp3.exe (1 left to go) ... Unable to create file \\MACHINE\\system32\O2kSp3.exe - Patch skipped! Creating batch file deploy_patches.bat ... Unable to create batch file (deploy_patches.bat)! --------------------------------------------------
Rarely, the log don't shows the complete address of the remote pc to create and copy the patches. I mean, the correct address it would be \\MACHINE\C$\WINNT\system32\Patches.... Why it shows me an incorrect address. Can I modify this? Thanks in advance,
Carlos Welhous

we'll start backwards, no you can't modify where it is pushing the patches to.
Possible work arounds:
1. Create the directory by hand on the remote machine. 2. Reboot the remote machine.
Odds are that it is making a Null connection or a non-admin connection for some reason and not using the correct credentials.
Now questions for you: 1. What version of LNSS are you running (click on Help > Version for exact version should be something like 3.3 2003 07 16) 2. What credentials are you using, Scan > Options > Session Tab, are you using Existing, Null, or Specified

This is exactly what I'm trying to deploy now. I cannot even deploy the O2Ksp3.exe executable as it is looking for Source Disc. I ended up patching the original Admin Install and just push the update to the client. The problem I have is the logs says everything ran, but the updates never got pushed. If I ran the batch file interactively from the winnt\system32\patch folder, it executes correctly.

Anthony, correct, there is no way not to have the cd (thanks MS) unless it has been done from an administrative share, or it was done via a network CDRom, which is basically the way I wrote the documentation on my Advanced uses page.
It should give you a notice in the return that it needs to be run interactively. I know the hotfixes do that are that way.

Thanks Eric, I followed the instructions you suggested and it worked. I created manually the "Patches" directory on the remote pc, restarted and then the LNSS do the job. Running LNSS 3.3
Thanks for your help.

oops, thought it was in this thread already, you can hit my website:
http://myweb.cableone.net/xnih
there are 2 sections on LNSS, one is files, one is documentation.

First of thanks for a great documentation. I am encountering an odd situation. If I use the LNSS to push the custom patches, I get an application error. But If i copy the resulting SFX executible file directly to the target machine and execute it manually, it worked fine. I'm stumped..

so i don't can change the default path of the instalation in the remote machine??? Can i edit a XML file for change to (for example) \\Name machine\C$\ or something else???
also when i use the administrator password of the remote machine i received a message told me that is incorrect..
Also i can use the null and less the actual user because (of course) the user doesn't have admin priviledges..

getting to be too many people in this thread, so one at a time:

no prob on the documenation, now onto your issue...
Where is the application error showing up? Inside of LNSS or on the remote machine? What exactly are you doing?

I don't think so, pretty sure it is hard coded to pull the install directory of windows and add system32\patches onto it.

please start a new thread on this and post the debug window information (stuff in the right hand window. Make sure you remvoe any IP addresses if you don't want to publish them to the world.
Also, check out this thread: http://forums.languard.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=000781

After creating the SFX package, I then used the LNSS to create a custom deploy. I just chose 1 computer as a test machine to deploy the SFX file. LNSS states that the patch has been deployed successfully. Now I go to the client and wait for the scheduled job to execute. Once it executes on the scheduled time, Application Debug error comes up on the target machine.

but if you run it by hand it runs fine?
First off I'd make sure you run it in interactive mode, should be under advanced options. Next check out the path it actually is extracting too. I know that killed me quite a few times where the self extracting file was adding another layer to itself.
Ultimately though, LNSS has done its job to get the file to the machine, at this point it would just be getting the SFX to be setup correctly.
Running it in interactive mode helps out some and then just running it by hand normally helps out.
so throw the interactive switch and let me know. I'm around here for another 2 hours or so and will check in every so often on the thread.

Let me clarify something, when I said execute it manually, meaning, I copied the SFX file directly to a folder on the target machine, without using LNSS, and execute it manually, it works fine. But if I execute the SFX file that was copied by LNSS and execute it manually, I get the unknown exception error.
I tried the interactive mode in LNSS and it's the same thing unknown exception error.

if you go into the c:\winnt\system32\patches directory and execute the SFX file that is sitting there what does it do?
same thing?

Eric,
I don't know why but as soon as I shortened the .exe file created by SFX to 8 characters or less, everything worked the way it should. I'm not sure if that's a limitation with LNSS deploying custom patches or what?
