Trouble pushing office patches - 25.Jun.2009 9:42:01 AM

Hello,

We are experiencing problems with scans for Office 2007 patches. GFI LANGuard shows that some of our servers are missing patches. We use LANGuard to push the patches with the option set to use deploy using original names, the remediation shows it successfully installed the patches, and the server reboots. The next daily scan runs the next morning and it shows the patches are missing. I remote in to the servers, open add/remove programs and check the box to show updates and the missing patches that should have installed are no where to be found.

This is happening on numerous servers and workstations and is always any of the office .cab updates. Office Service Packs install and report without a hitch. Does anyone have any ideas or clues to try or investigate before I wait for two weeks for debug logs to be processed?

I've seen this type of issue in our support office a few times before.  More often it occurs with Microsoft SQL patches where an application other than one of Microsoft's defaults comes bundled with a SQL component that does not get patched nicely. In regards to Microsoft Office patches, we would need the specific patch that does not seem to get deployed, and a full set of debug logs.  Also, an important piece of information to know: Does Microsoft Windows Update still feel the patch is missing?

Lastly, a list of installed service packs can be obtained by opening a command prompt and typing:
WMIC qfe > C:\qfe.txt

Once done, open qfe.txt and look at the installed service packs and patches. It should closely match Add/Remove programs but can often show the information in a more concise manner.

DrewE,

I'll try this out and see, as for the office patch numbers it basicly is any office 2007 .cab patch file. None of them will successfully report that they are installed after a supposedly successful install. I'll get back to you on this.

Thanks,

DrewE,

I've just ran that command and reviewed the file and I notice no where in the file does it inclue the descriptions for office 2007 patches. There is a colum for the descriptions and all of the other patches to server, .net, etc all show except office. There are a ton of ones above these though with blank discriptions and instead of showing the kb number in the HotFixID colum it just shows file1 next to all of the applied patches with a blank description. The actual KB number for those blank patches is in the ServicePackInEffect colum instead. It does not appear as though it is pushing these patches correctly. or the reporting is not correctly identifying them.

Something doesn't sound right about this. Would you be able to open a support case online at http://support.gfi.com/Support/support.aspx?lcode=en and include the details we have discovered and the qfe.txt file when you do?
