I have a distributed deployment. On my exchange Server I have the data retrieval rola and user mailbox sync role. GFI is installed to a dedicated RAID 1 array on that server. The UMpolling and other GFI files are on that partition which is F:. On the C: partition of that server there is ~7GB free space. When GFI is running, the free space on C: drops rapidly and steadily until it reaches 0 then jumps back to ~7GB. it repeats this over and over. I cannot see any large files or directories on C:. Performance monitor shows the Avg disk Queue length of about 3-4 and spiking to 30 for C:. all the other drives including the exchange logs and database have very low queue length. This behavior stops when i stop the GFI services and the free space is steady at ~7gb. What can be causing this and can I make it stop. I at least want to move whatever it is to the GFI partition which has very little used space.

GFI requires a large amount of free space on the drive letter where the system temp folders are located, and will also put quite a reasonable load on that drive. If your drive is reaching 0 (or very low) space then unfortunately you don't have enough free space on that drive and you will need to move the location of your system temp folders (TEMP and TMP system environment variables) to a drive letter with more free space (and preferably one that is reasonably fast) and then restart the server. If you leave it as is, then running out of disk space will destabilise the GFI software, we used to have this issue and GFI software would randomly put all it's indexes into a rebuild state, and had no such problems after we moved system temp folders from a C drive with 20GB free space, to another drive letter than had 96GB free space (how much free space you require (possibly?) depends on the amount of traffic going through the system).

I have moved the TEMP and TMP folders and rebooted. The disk usage behavior continues as before. I do see system files in the new TEMP and TMP locatin so i know that is working. Can it have anything to do with the location of the exchange pickup folder. should I move it as described in the following KB article? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822933

Is the usage the same as in disk queue length, or running out of space? Do you see new files being added to the old temp location on the C drive, if so what kind of filenames?

you use sysinternals process monitor to see the file activity, but if it's a busy in use server you'll want to be careful to set your initial filters right to avoid the filters destablising the machine.
