Hello. I have two issues. Network Server Monitor (NSM) is installed on a Windows Server 2003 machine and our environment is all Windows Server 2003. I get this error sporadically on seemingly random machines. The security logs on the monitored machines show that NSM sometimes tries to authenticate using the "NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON" account. This is throwing 538 and 540 success audits in the security log of the monitored server. Other times, NSM is using the correct, network account. My issues are: 1) Can I configure NSM to always use the network account with which it is configured? 2) Is there a way to eliminate the "Unable to query service state" failures (besides setting NSM to not notify me when this happens)? Thank you, Chris

Hi ChrisH, 1) Could you please tell me which types of checks are you using? 2) There isn’t the possibility with the current version of NSM to ignore the “Unable to query service state” failures. Also I didn’t recommend ignoring this failure because it happens if the connection to the service control manager cannot be established or if the service information cannot be accessed.

Actually, it is possible to configure NSM to not send alerts on query failures. What I'm trying to figure out is why it randomly logs in with NT Authority/ANONYMOUS account and why it fails to query sometimes, but not others. It happens when querying services that are always running.

Would you be able to open a support request with us online so we can better understand the environment in which GFI Network Server Monitor is installed? You can do so here: http://support.gfi.com/Support/support.aspx?lcode=en

I am willing to do that, but we do not have a support contract with GFi. Is that a problem?

Yes, without the support contact the amount of support we can provide is very limited in this situation. This situation does not appear to be occurring as a common issue among our other clients, and therefore without the logs I'm afraid we may not be able to understand the situation exactly.
