You might consider performing an Event Log Monitoring Check for either of the following Events: - Event ID 513 - Windows is Starting Up.
- Event ID 512 - Windows is Shutting Down.
Thanks

Hi, In Windows 2003, Event ID 513 will still be generated upon Shut down. What difficulties have you encountered with monitoring this event?

I've rebooted my server twice and it has not generated 513. Is it generated on a shut down or reboot? Other monitoring packages monitor SNMP for reboots, can we do the same for GFI? if so how? There has to be a way GFI to monitor reboots. It can't just rely on pings. Please advise. Thank you -D

Hi Dedos, You may want to enable the generation of event 512 when the machine is restarted. This can be done from Administrative Tools -> Local Security Policy -> Local Policies -> Audit Policy. Double click on Audit system events, and enable both success and failure. This will cause the Operating System to log an event 512 when the OS is restarted.

I've set up this check on our servers and it seems somewhat unreliable (even the test check can take ages... or succeed). So we get no information at all about our servers uptime (not even an alert that the check itself failed...) Any idea to improve this behaviour ?

It's hopeless PJ, i've been beating this dead horse continuously. I've even called support on this with no resolution. My issue was also that the check will back up if the initial check does not complete but my logs are like 3 mbs which takes awhile for GFI read "I guess". So after the first check completes, the 2nd reboot check will expire since it took over 3 minutes and passed the first fail. Weird huh? But any hoo, since then I'm letting my support expire and going to another solution since GFI could not give me a answer or care for my on going struggle with this ONE simple request. They couldnt even give me an OID for a server or pc reboot to atleast produce a SNMP trap. *sigh*

Well... Couldn't we set up something with "uptime.exe" then ? Or with the File Age script... I just don't have time at the moment, but I'll have a look later. PJ

One of the issues that we are fighting against is GFI Network Server Monitor's ability as compared to another product of GFI - GFI Events Manager. GFI Network Server Monitor is designed for proactive scanning solutions. We will actively monitor the server and alert you if it fails to respond to ping requests, or a service goes down. GFI Events Manager is different in regards to its monitoring. It scans Windows event logs, along with W3c and SysLog messages. It alerts you once an event has been logged in the windows event log. This product may be more along the lines of what you are looking for in order to best alert you to server reboots. Although GFI Network Server Monitor offers an event scanner, its feature set is limited compared to GFI EventsManager
