SNMP Queries - 2.Nov.2004 4:46:00 AM

I created rules to monitor our USV and Switches over SNMP. It works fine for a few days, then suddenly GFI gives me failures with the response "Unable to open SNMP session for given host and community string".

First I tried to solve the problem with a restart, but the same problem occurs again after a few days.

After the server changed the rules to 'Failure', I have tried the same rules on another GFI Network Monitor Server and it works fine, that means that there are no problems with SNMP or the SNMP-Agent on the devices.

What could be the problem?

Thank you!

Hi,

In your post, you mention that you are solving the problem with a restart. Are you restarting the Network Server Monitor, the machine, or something else?

Can you try installing GFI LANguard Network Security Scanner on the same machine and when the problem occurs use the SNMP walk feature which should provide you further information. Please let me know if this fails also, or if you get different results.

I restarted the server, not only the network Server monitor.

I also tried to get the SNMP information with a MIB Browser and it works fine. I got positive response from the Browser, but GFI Network Server monitor gives me failures. There are no problems with SNMP or the SNMP-Agent on the devices.

I have the same problem too, although monitor works fine with no snmp-nodes.

Snmpwalk or snmpget could get info in same time monitor stuck.

Hi all,

We are trying to determine the source of the problem. Can you please inform us of the devices that you are trying to monitor?

Also, do you monitor different SNMP devices on different machines? When the problem occurs, does it occur to only one device on one machine, or to specific devices on different machines, or to all the devices on all the machines?

Thank you

Err, the trouble is that all snmp monitored devices fails simultaneously. Can't see any relations in fail. Once they could work 2 days, once they continue failing after restart just in few mins.

I monitor snmp device like cisco and some controllers (it measures temperature in room), so no relation here IMHO.

Maybe it's some bad coding in udp-stack? So it gets full quickly and so on.

If it posible to debug this situation, please, let me know.

Hi!

We have nearly the same problem like lesha. We monitor different devices
like Cisco, 3Com and our USV. All the devices also fails simultaneously.
The time span when they fail differentiate between a few hours and 1 day.

Same problem here! This problem did not occur when i monitored only one SNMP source. But since i added a few more sources (on different machines) i frequently have this problem. After a while of monitoring (hours to days) suddenly all SNMP rules stop working (error message as above). Interestingly i can still use an other SNMP tool on the same machine for SNMP Get/Walk commands on these sources no longer accessible to NSM. After service restart, it will work again for some time. Please help! I just purchased the "unlimited" version...

Hi !
I have the same problem, I have 4 rules that monitor the S.M.A.R.T. status on two server Windows 2003 Std, when I restart the "GFI Network Server Monitor" service the rules work fine for few hours and after they suddenly stop to work, if I try tu use another SNMP to get the same snmp values from the same GFI server it work fine so it's not a SNMP configuration problem, I have installed GFI Network server monitor on a Windows 2003 server system, maybe this can be the problem ? someone have found a workaround about this problem ?

In Network Server Monitor version 6, the SNMP checks will be done differently.

Such issues should not occur in the new version. I would therefore recommend that you upgrade to the latest version, which can be downloaded from ftp://ftp.gfi.com/BETA/networkservermonitor6.exe

More information on the new version can be found at http://forums.gfi.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=15;t=000004
