Dear All,

I was wondering how can we reuse patches or service pack for other PCs that GFI LANGurad already downloaded from Microsoft.

For example: A machine named "srv" was scanned by GFI LANGurad and the result shows that the machine need to patch MS09-019(969897) and I used LANGuard remediate tool to download it and deploy the patch to the machine. After that I scan another machine named "srv1" and it also needs MS09-019(969897). At this point, I don't want LANGuard to download this patch again since this patch already store at (C:\Program Files\GFI\LANGurad 9\Repository\English\). My question are:

1- how can I deploy this patch to srv1 machine without downloading it again from Microsoft?

Please help me.

Best regards,
Sopheary

GFI Languard should not download any patch twice if it already has it in the repository folder. We first look in the Repository\English folder to see if the file is downloaded. The common reason you may see the software trying to download the same patch again, is if you scanned two different machines with different operating systems (XP vs Server 2003). In this scenario, there may actually be two seperate patches needed from Microsoft

Hi, as MS already issued Windows XP SP3, can LanGuard enable me to auto-download Windows XP SP2 to deploy my PC instead of using the latest patch SP3? Because I heard from my vendor, LanGuard only use the latest patches, whenever new patches are issued, it will overwrite the old patch, and we will not able to get older patches/service pack??

Note: I am still evaluating a patch tool for my company.

You are correct. GFI Languard does not list Service Pack 2 if Service Pack 3 has already been released.

Thanks DrewE for your replied.
Even though my PC do not have SP2? In such case, how can I deploy SP2 instead of SP3 ?(sorry, I cant search from the forum on this matter)

FYI, I got email from the support saying:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If MS comes out with SP3 and SP2 is not installed on the machines it will show that SP2  is missing as well.  At this point you could choose what patch to deploy.

LANSS does not "overwrite" patches, but more shows you a list of all missing patches.

After you scan one of these machines, can you look under the Analyze tab, right click it and select "Deploy Microsoft Service Packs" ? Do you see the list of service packs missing from this machine?

Hi DrewE,

I cant do the test because all my office PCs are installed with Windows XP SP2. I ask in case in future, MS release SP4, but instruction to me is to apply only SP3. Then my vendor told me that LanDesk will only issued SP4, I will not able to get SP3? Because I am now evaluating several patch tools (include the one recommend by my vendor) to decide which to buy.

Microsoft's Service packs typically supersede their previous service packs. Simply, you do not need to have XP Service Pack 2 installed to install Service Pack 3. If you are running a machine with no Service Pack, you can still upgrade to Service Pack 3.

What this means for GFI Languard is that we only see the latest patch necessary for the machine to install. So, if Microsoft releases XP Service Pack 4, the only option available would be to install Service Pack 4.

You can always deploy this service pack as a custom deployment, and you can also query the machines to determine what machine is not running the latest service packs for a list of machines that need the updates.

Hi, that mean, if MS release SP4, we can't deploy SP3? (my company normally do not use the latest SP, afraid it is not stable etc).

You can still deploy the software by downloading SP3 "redistributable" from Microsoft. Then deploying it using the "Custom Software Deployment"
