I have a newly-installed MA6 server setup, writing to a local SQL 2005 DB.  Exchange is not installed on this server.

I have ~60 users with mailboxes that are approximately 600MB/ea.  Most of the users have, at least, a local PST file as they are not allowed to store anymore than 650MB on the Exchange server.

I have mailbox synchronization setup on the MA server & journaling has been active for a few days now.  So, I'm set as far as new email goes.  BUT, what steps do I need to take to "catch up" our server.  I would like to archive all mail that is currently on the server as well as all mail that users have in PSTs.  Would it be possible to accomplish this w/o losing directory structure (both currently on the Exchange server mailboxes & in the PST files)?

I'm looking for some help w/ basic steps and/or opinions.  I can figure out the tools but I'm not sure where to begin w/ this as I'm new to the GFI toolset.

Thanks!

The only way to keep the folder structure from a pst file is to restore it back to the Exchange Inbox it came from then let MailArchiver poll it and archive the emails. Then you can delete the emails from the Inbox.

then to do it, you have to use eewiz... we can't say that this step of migration is fast & easy with MA !

OK, I'm a bit confused by that answer...

Say I have a mailbox that had 2k messages in 20 different folders prior to the MA install/setup.  Is there a way to get these messages into the MA archive stores & retain folder structure?  Will/Can it do this automatically (ie direct from the mailbox) or do I have to do an export/import?  How do I keep from duplicating the mail that has been archived (mail that arrived after the MA install).

As for the PSTs, that wasn't clear either.  Are you saying I can copy my PSTs back to the server and poll the folders in such a way that they archive automaticaly (retaining folder structure)?

The key thing here is that the folder structure is virtual.. within the connector itself.  I believe it stays alive in the web version, but I can not verify that..

If you want to use a folder structure, then it can only be done through the outlook sync function, so therefore.. yes, you have to re-import the old PST into the INBOX and let the polling system do it's thing.
There is a small issue perhaps, in that it only shows emails back one year.  I have not found out if it keeps the folder structure in the web side beyond that time.. perhaps tech support can answer that..

The other key issue, is that the email must be in the archiving system for it to be acted upon.. so.. you must put the POST in the inbox, then re-run the wizard, then the outlook sync will see it and sync it...

As far as duplicating.. when you import the PST, if you run the import wizard against that box, it will not dupe anyhting because the emails already there have been marked archived, and the wizard ignores them.. It will only archive what is "new" to it.

Myself, I am struggling with this process because my store is so full, that I have to make sure that I have free space before I can import any old PST's.. through the inbox.. It is taking me much longer just because I have to find time to do all the work.

To help clear this up for you.  We have 200+ users.  I opened up eewiz (in your mailarchiver installed directory).  Ran the exchange email export, you can select multiple mailboxs at a time, i did around 10-15 safely.  Pointed eewiz to a folder on my local computer then just  moved the messages to the pickup folder ( GFI\MailArchiver\MAIS\Pickup) after i had the import service setup for which database to go to.  Just make sure you tell it to not export past the day you turned on journaling.
As far as the folder structure goes, i have not had a chance to test it yet, hope to today.
My whole process took around 2 days for the mailboxes.  Not too bad as most of the time was it running on it's own.

We have had a period of time when emails were both getting archived into PST files AND archived into GFI Mail Archiver.

Is there a way we can update the folder structure of those already archived emails to match the folder structure in the PST file?

What would happen if we copied the emails from the PST file into the inbox, then run the wizard against that mailbox, would we end up with duplicate copies of those emails in the archive?
