We purchased 50 licenses for 30 users but Webmonitor is picking up both the IP and the User so we ran out of licenses.  What do we do?

Hi,

We would require some debug logging from GFI WebMonitor. Can you please perform the following:
a) Stop GFI WebMonitor service and the ISA Server Firewall service.
b) Open Regedit (Start -> Run -> Type 'regedit' and press Enter)
c) Browse to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\GFI\WebMonitor\]
d) Change the 'debug' dword value from '0' to '1'
e) Restart the services stopped in (a)
f) Reproduce the problem.
g) After reproducing the problem, generate a set of trouble shooter files. Start the trouble shooter application from the WebMonitor program group, and when this is finished, zip up and send me the support directory created in the WebMonitor directory.

Send us the files to forums@gfi.com

As temporarily workaround, restart the WebMonitor service - this will reset the users counted.

Thank you.

Has there been any resolution to this problem?  I am currently on build 20060106 and am having the same problem of Webmonitor picking up both the username and IP address as distinct 'users'.

Hi,

WebMonitor will display both authenticated users and un-authenticated users in the Users history. However, WebMonitor will retreive the ip address of authenticated uses. If un-authenticated requests come from the same ip address, the ip address will not be used for licensing purposes.

If your problem persists, kindly send us your troubleshooting files as advised above.

Thank you.

I'll try and gen some debug files and send them in when the problem recurs.  It took about a week for it to happen the first time.

But, right now, WebMonitor is counting a license hit for both the username and the IP address.  for example, if I look in the Users History for my name and IP address, I find both as separate entries, both of which list external sites as destinations.  However, my ISA server requires user authentication for every user to get out to the Internet (including me) - so the IP address entry in the list must have come from an authenticated connection or it would not have been allowed through.

The only exception to authentication that I can think of is this: Since I use WPAD, every user on my network will hit the ISA server just by opening Internet Explorer, even if their destination is only an internal host (and, therefore they would not have to authenticate).  However, as I said above, both my username and IP address entries in the Users History list external sites as destinations and therefore must have authenticated for ISA to allow them through.

Maybe this is a result of some sort of connection caching by ISA, but if so, WebMonitor should account for it somehow.

Final clue:  I have a 100-user license, but only about 90 users on the network - so WebMonitor must be double-dipping somewhere.

Hi,

WebMonitor should be working as I explained in my previous email - i.e. For authenticated users, the ip address is noted. If a connection is received from the same ip address, it will be shown in the user history as coming from the IP, but will not be counted again for licensing.

Can you please ensure that you are using the latest build - 20060106

Thank you.

I finally had the opportunity to set up the debug stuff and it only took a day to reproduce the problem.  I have just sent the troubleshooting files in to forums@gfi.com

I am on the latest version - I installed it for the WMF scanning.  In fact, I don't believe I ran into this license problem until after I upgraded - if that's any clue.  Prior to that, I believe I was one rev behind (the file date on my old version is 9/9/2005 - which is the day I downloaded it).

Has anything been found about this problem?  I sent in my debug files almost 2 weeks ago, but haven't heard anything either form tech support or in this forum.  Since then, I have upgrade to the latest build in anticipation of installing ISA2004 SP2 - still have the problem.

Please download build 20060130 or later (currently downloadable from our main GFI web site).
This should fix your licensing problem.

With Kind Regards DavidFA
