Just an FYI, our Office patching issue has been resolved. If anyone else has experienced an issue deploying Microsoft Office patches then you were probably doing the following steps. There is a patch that was provided to me for testing but I imagine it will be coming out soon in an update through the console once it is approved.

1. The deployment is done on schedule, not immediately.
2. The patch file is a CAB file (usual for Office patches).
3. The user enables the "Deploy patches with their original file names”*

*Note: there is no need to enable the "Deploy patches with their original file names” option in this case. That is an advanced option that was created for a Microsoft JVM patch that would not install when the patch file was renamed (as you know, we rename patches by adding a prefix to avoid conflicts). An administrator should rarely need to make use of such option
