We are currently using Mail Security 8.1.  No matter how I setup Attachment Checking, I cannot seem to get any of the 2007 file formats to get through the filtering process without disabling Attachment Checking all together.  This is obviously not desireable...

Thanks!

File "new microsoft office excel worksheet.xlsx\.rels" triggered rule "Default Attachment Checking Rule".
The file ".rels" was blocked by the attachment checking module because there is no file name before the extension.

I understand that it may not, specifically, support Office 2007 files... HOWEVER... this is a simple file-extension blocking issue.  There's no reason why I cannot specifically allow an .xlsx file to get through the filters.  You advertise the product as if you can allow or deny any file extension.

I will reply to the emails that you have sent as well.

Thank you for your time.

The Office 2007 formats are compressed files, like ZIP. Regardless of what three or four letters you tack on the end of a file name, MS will recognize the file as a compressed file and scan its contents. That's why explicitly permitting XLSX files won't help.

Fortunately, there are only a limited number of file types that are stored inside an Office 2007 file, including RELS. If you explicitly add that file type and a few others, you will soon be able to accept Office 2007 files through MS. It took me a few days to catch and release all the quarantined files that were coming in until I recognized all the natural components of XLSX, PPTX and DOCX files, but now they don't get hung up any longer.

Good luck,

Joe

Joe, is there a chance you can post all the correct file types?

I can't separate what file types besides RELS I had to add just to permit Office 2007, but I recall that XML files and some types of image files (already allowed) were necessary too.

Just for kicks, take a few Office 2007 documents on your computer and change the extension to ZIP. Open them up with WinZip or your favorite compressed file utility and see what they look like inside.

after i finish this project, i'll see if i can get this working...  it looks like:

.rels
.xml
.bin

I assume you have two rules... one blocking all attachments and the other a "block all except" list containing everything you want to allow... correct?

That's right - I delete known bad files (e.g. .SCR) with rule one, then I permit known good files (e.g. .JPG) and quarantine everything else with rule two.

well, i just took a minute to try it and it didn't work... I don't think it's even getting to the extension portion (.rels, .xls, etc)... The error states:

"The file ".rels" was blocked by the attachment checking module because there is no file name before the extension. "

Thoughts?

I tried:

1) *.rels
2) .rels
2) both *.rels & .rels

Are you using the same version of MSEC as I am?

Well, when you upgrade, you're going to like the new AV engines and web-based interface...
