I'd like to get your opinions on a new install before I commit myself to something I won't be happy with.  I have a small Exchange 2003 environment - ~60 users on 1 server.  Most mailboxes are right around 500MB at this point.  We're sick of users having PSTs all over the place & are tired of hearing them complain about having to delete mail that is needed.  So, GFI MailArchiver to the rescue - I hope.

I installed M$ SQL 2005 on the same server as MailArchiver.  This is on a dedicated machine, not the Exchange server.  I have journaling setup & have created the SQL DB.  Here are my questions:

1) When setting this up for the first time, what are the recommendations for Archive Stores?  Should I use SQL only or SQL + File System.  What are the pros/cons to each setup.

2) For an environment of my size, what is considered to be the best practice for splitting the archives?  Time period?  How long is TOO long?

I'm sure I'll think of more questions later.  I'm running on a 30-day license & hope to purchase it.

I would recommend that you use the SQL only option since you will get more compression of the emails that way. As far as the archive store size it is not recommended that the SQL database get any larger than 30 - 40 gb. Most people go by Quarters unless they receive a larger amount of mail and go by month.

Thanks Michael.  I asked the same question to Tech Support & heard similiar answers from tehm.  I'm leaning toward a SQL only setup as we do not have a large amount of mail go through here.

One more question.  I selected the "Archive Stores" menu & setup a few to test with.  Then, I read the section about managing stores.  Why is it I don't see the stores I created when I select the "Archive Stores Management" menu?  I thought I would see the same stores in each menu location - with the latter having scheduling abilities added to the first.

Thanks!

They are not available in both sections since Archive Store Management is more like a Queue of archive stores to be used in the future. Once an archive store is flipped to be used then it goes to archive stores
