After applying latest 3 critical updates for Server 2003 on our monitoring server, NSM fails to launch - with the following error:

"A required GFI Languard NSM module, NSMCOMM, could not be loaded. If the problem persists please reinstall ..."

It also generates EventID 534 failure event in the Security log for the NSM_MONITOR_USR - "The user has not been granted the requested
logon type at this machine".

Logon account that the NSM services use has not been changed. So ... which local / domain security policies do I need to modify to get this going again? Is this related to the latest 3 critical security updates?

This is the first time that this issue has been reported. We will surely be checking further into it.

In the meantime, can you generate a set of troubleshooting files. Also, can you backup your event logs using the following procedure and send them to us at support@gfi.com?

Can you send me some logging from your Event Viewer? To do this:

i. Open your Event Viewer.
ii. Select Application Log and click File -> "Save Log File As..."
iii. Save the log file to the desktop in evt format.
iv. Do the same for the System Log, zip up and send me both log files.

You may also want to re-install the same directory and check if the problem persists.

Had laready emaled support@gfi over the weekend, but have now added to that original mail with application and system logs as you asked for and mentioned your name.

If I reinstall to same directory, do I keep all my existing rules? Where / how are these stored? How can I back them up?

For this issue, you may want to contact me directly at nicks@gfi.com, or provide me with the ticket number for your issue.

Also, can you inform me if the Windows 2003 where GFI Network Server Monitor is installed is a Domain Controller?

Thank you.

I have also been seeing this issue. I do an uninstall / reinstall and NSM starts working again. Has there been a resolution to this problem?

I am having the same problem. The machine is not a DC that this is installed on. Every reboot I have to reinstall this program. This is very annoying. Is there a fix for this yet?

I'm having exactly same problem. This is a Windows 2003 Server Enterprise Edition which is also a domain controller.
It's a brand new box which I just set up along with all the latest patches, then I installed GFI NSM.
I've imported my configuration from another server and works fine when I start it.
However, on reboot, the error message shows up and I'm unable to start it. Uninstall/reinstall fixes it again until next reboot.

Event log shows:

Reporting queued error: faulting application GfiNmApp.exe, version 5.0.0.16, faulting module GfiNmApp.exe, version 5.0.0.16, fault address 0x0000110f.

This surely can be configured in the Local Policies. One of the settings that you should check is the Logon on Locally policy. Check also the other local policy setting that shows the users that can act as part of the OS.

Since you are running a Widnows 2003 Domain Controller, you will need to configure this from the Global Policies. Go to Start -> Run -> type "gpedit.msc" and press Enter. Go to Conputer Configuration -> Windows Settings -> Security Settings -> User Rights Assignment.

I have have had this same problem on an ongoing basis, but on Windows XP. I put in a support call a while ago, and we disabled the antivirus software and did a reinstall. This appeared to fix the problem, but a few months ago, it reappeared. I now have to do a uninstall and reinstall of NSM about ever 2 days. It's getting rather annoying! I checked the security policy settings, and those are all fine. In fact, I am using the domain admin account for the service, so it definately should not be a security issue. I am running NSM on a windows XP Pro box. The problem happens both pre-SP2 and after SP2. Any ideas?
