I opened my GFI console this morning and noticed that "Last results update" was 10/4/2008 9:23 AM.  Today is 10/6/08.

Both GFI services are running.  No noticable events in the logs. I can manually perform "monitoring checks"

Any idea why this is happening.  It has now happened a couple times for me.

A recycle of the GFI Engine service resolves this issue.

I am running Network Server Monitor 7.0 - Build 20070803

we are having similar problems,

restarting services doesn't do the trick, a server restart is needed.

There are several issues that could cause this, the most notable, however is something is backing up the backend database during the evening.  A service restart may be needed after the backup is complete.

How long has this been going on for?  What time do you notice the monitoring stops?  Is it always in the evening, or randomly spread out?

Good morning DrewE

our monitoring server is not being backed up, so this can not be an issue

the service stops - seemingly - randomly and not on a daily or weekly base, which makes it hard for us
to investigate further.

at the moment im monitoring our monitoring device, when the service fails i get a message so i can check what is happening.

Our NSM DB is also not backed up.  The DB is hosted on SQL Server 2005 along with other DBs

I just notice this in the morning as it is now part of my morning checks as I cannot reliably count on the monitoring staying active.

In my situation the services (Both attendant and engine) show running in the services MSC.

I will try to document when it goes down and try to find a pattern.

I would advise opening a support ticket with us at http://support.gfi.com .  We can investigate your debug logs for exact reasons why this is failing.

In my case it seems to relate to the following error in app log:

Event ID 1000
Category None
Source: .NET Runtime 2.0 Error Reporting

Faulting application nsm_engine.exe, version 7.0.0.134, stamp 46b1b16f, faulting module ntdll.dll, version 5.2.3790.3959, stamp 45d742c0, debug? 0, fault address 0x0004afb2.

which lead me to: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/913384

HOTFIX: A .NET Framework 2.0 application that runs under a user account
context when no user profile is associated with the user account context
may crash, or you may receive an access violation error message

too bad the hotfix won't install so still looking
anyone had any luck ?

.NET issues can be tricky with our software.  Sometimes .NET crashes and causes our software to fail.  Usually a reinstall of the .NET Framework resolves the issue.  Sometimes however, our software causes .NET to fail due to misconfiguration or other issues.   We would need to look at the debug logs to determine the exact cause.

That's what I meant when I said that NSM ist not reliable!

I frequently have various effects, like stopping of monitoring, reporting of errors where there are none, even not by manual checks or errors in a whole group of monitoring checks. For example sometimes all web checks are failing with
"Unable to create a new internet session (probably your proxy settings are not correct)" until NSM service restart.

How should I rely on a monitoring software which is so unreliable?

Hello,

If you are using Microsoft SQL as the backend database please switch to an MS Access backend and see if the problem remains. If it does I would recommend that you follow DrewE's suggestion of opening a support request so we can investigate further.
