Since upgrading to 6.1 my current database is constantly "merging". I called tech support and we deleted the index and tried restarting the search service. Now it's merging again with nothing in the index folder other than some default files. This has been going on for hours now. What the heck can I do since all my users cannot search any longer?

I am having the same problem.

If you are using a firebird/binary file setup, you may be having the same problem I am.

Firebird uses the Windows Temp variable to create fb_sort files, which are used for the MA indexing service.  I found these files would take up a lot of space when the indexing is running (20+ GB) in my case.  First I thought it was a space constraint issue, so I had to change the windows temp variable to an alternative drive.  Now I think my antivirus is scanning those files, causing me corruption on my indexes (which in turn keeps them in a constant rebuild/merge state).  I'm working with my AV vendor to find a way to exclude those files as well, but since they have no file extension, and are in a common use area (the windows temp folder) I have no easy means to exclude these files.  Hopefully they come up with a solution, since GFI support suggested I move everything to a SQL server.

This is awful and needs to be fixed ASAP. An antivirus incompatible with Exchange server archiver? Terrible programming GFI. Terrible.

Been running for almost 2 days now and nothing is indexed, nothing. Users are going crazy on me, thanks guys. Had you labeled this a Beta I would never have installed it on a production machine. Where are the logs?

Everything has been sent. Still no indexing on the current database. Tried tech support too, no help. It's not looking good at this point.

Can I save the databases and reinstall GFI. As it stands now it's unusable. No one can access any archives, I can't search, I can't add a new database, can't index. I'm running out of options, I need some help here quick!!

I spoke with level 2 support on Friday and throughout the weekend via email. They had to remote in and do a bunch of stuff. Nothing seemed to work until we kept restarting services. Finally indexing began and completed over the weekend. Thanks to all those that emailed me their suggestions, one of them must have worked.

Hi bjanow,

How did you eventually manage to get this fixed? Unfortunately I have had the same problem for almost a week now and like you I have found that support from GFI is practically nonexistent. Pretty poor really as this would be a mission critical application for any organization.

thanks

Thanks to Roderick from GFI support this problem has now been solved. I thought I would post the answer here to help anyone else who comes across this problem.

I had indexing set to run once a day at midnight to keep load off of the server. It turns out that by default MailArchiver merges the indexes automatically every morning at 2:00am. Apparently they stay in a merging state until indexing is run. So in my case, the indexes would stay in a merging state from 2:00am until midnight. Although I have had this setup for 3 years now without any problems. The solution was to run indexing after 2:00am or as suggested by Roderick, set MailArchiver to index new emails immediately.

A big thank you to Roderick.
