Hi there,

First time post so i hope someone can help

i have a problem with an application that two of our users have. It is a parts ordering app that has it's own SMTP engine. It emails parts orders to a supplier (electrolux) and it worked fine on our previous version of GFI.

We have recently upgraded to MailSecurity v10.0 SMTP/Exchange (from same version, earlier build) and MailEssentials 14.0 (from v12) and now only one user can send emails out using this app. The vague error message they get back relates to the gateway not authenticating from their PC. All other email functions are fine. This SMTP server that this app will use can be specified within the app, by IP.

My diagnosis of the problem so far has included...

- checking firewall. Nothing specific for the one user who can send parts emails.
- checking permissions/relaying etc in MailEssentials. No entries for the user who can send emails. Added user who can't, made no change
- changed IP of PC that can't send email orders, to be the same IP as the PC that can send email orders. Logged in as admin. Was able to send orders OK. Changed IP back, logged in as admin, could not send.
- We upgraded server and software at the same time. The server with the previous version is still on the network. Pointed parts ordering app to the old server, was able to send an order ok.

So it looks like it's possibly user or pc based, or a bit of both. My question is, when this pc tries to send, and gets the error message back, where would be the best place to look in the GFI logs for an entry ? would this sort of thing be logged ? All tracing in the mailsecurity switchboard is turned on. Any other ideas ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

darren.a,

Try to open a telnet session from the client itself to the SMTP server by running a command prompt, then these commands:

telnet <smtp-server-ip> 25
helo
mail from: <youremail@yourdomain.com>
rcpt to: <recipientmail@recipientdomain.com>
data
subject: this is a test
data
.

Is this successful?

This might be due to the permissions / authentication settings of the SMTP server (IIS / Exchange).

Are you running MailEssentials / MailSecurity on a separate server or on an Exchange server itself? If so, Exchange 2003 or 2007?

Hi Dietmar,

Thanks for the reply.

Ok, did all that, sent some messages and it was a relaying/security issue. Added the IP of the PC to the SMTP Virtual Server in IIS on the gateway server,  in the Access, Relay Restrictions screen.

Works a treat. Many thanks for your help, much appreciated
