Mail Archiver General Question - 1.Feb.2005 4:20:00 PM

Hi All,
I have downloaded the evaluation copy and read all the documentation on MailArchiver. I seem to have a good idea of what goes on and how it works, but I have just a (newbie) question to ask:
I understand that it uses Journalling, and when it processes the emails from the archive mailbox, it removes them and places them in SQL database. What happens to the emails that are in the users mailboxes, do they have to manually delete them or will they be removed automatically after a period of time? Does this mean I have to setup policies for each mailbox on my Exchange Server?
Thanks.

You could setup policies in Exchange or more likely use a tool like exmerge to bulk delete emails older than x days.

No, it does not affect the users mailboxes at all. Be careful about setting up policies to delete mail older than X days as suggested. Anything that is older than the date you set up journaling will be lost. The policy will delete the messages from the users mailbox and you will NOT have a copy in your GFI Mail Archives.
I plan on having this program running for a year before I even tell my users it exists. Hopefully within that period GFI or someone will come up with a way to import all messages when first set up and to then use the journaling feature to keep it up to date.

you could do an exmerg dump of the old mail right after the GFI setup
note* just pull out a copy of the mail do not remove it
then dump that mail into the archive mailbox (that will put the old mail in the GFI system)
then run the exmerg to remove the old mail
Refer to
http://kbase.gfi.com/showarticle.asp?id=KBID002276 for the importing procedure
just a thought!
