Hi, I just installed the program and this is what I have run into, I see all my MS downloads as failed. I went to the web site via NSS right click and they come down no problem. What is even more agrivating is that after I DL them into the correct directory and then try to deploy them NSS won't because it still shows that they have failed to DL. Any help is appreciated. It is version 8.

Hi BillD, at this point, it would make more sense to concentrate on why the downloads are failing in the first place. NSS8 is retrieving the Proxy Server information from IE on that same machine. I'm not sure if NSS is smart enough to get the information when you select "detect settings automatically" in IE, so maybe you should try to enter the proxy information eplicitly. Another option would of course be your firewall dropping the connection. Take a look at any connections to the Microsoft update Site and if thoise connections are made by a user or by a service.

Thanks Sven but there is no proxy server. For now it is on my station that goes directly to the Internet. I can also go and get them manually with no problem. Once I get them manually it does not recognise that I have. Any other ideas? Thanks again.

Putting your logon credentials into the GFI LANguard N.S.S. 8.0 Attendant Service fixed the download problem for me. I was able to download patches in the patch deployment area after making that change. Like you I could download them directly, but it would not show they were downloaded. So it did not seem to be a firewall or web filter problem. We don't have a proxy server specifically, but have a web filter that does some authentication back to the domain controller. I don't know if it is a problem passing credentials in the program or my network, but I can't fully scan computers on another domain unless I'm logged into that domain. Using alternate credentials does not work for me.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried my domain credentials which are domain admin level and I tried the actual domain admin credential as alternate credentails and still no luck.

There are many reasons why GFI products may fail to update automatically. Several things to check would include: - Do you have a proxy server?
- GFI products typically use the account the service is running under to connect to the internet. If the proxy settings are incorrect in Internet Explorer for this user account, this can cause trouble with our software getting out to the internet.
- Do you have a firewall that is blocking the connection?
- Be sure to check your firewall logs to see if any connections are being blocked from the GFI server to the internet.
- In GFI Languard Network Security Scanner:
- Can you download the patch manually through internet explorer? Does this download take a long time for the first web page to come up? Does the download take a long time to complete? This could be an indication of timeout values being set wrong, and something you would need to either diagnose your internet connection for or submit a trouble ticket to GFI for as there may be some changes to the system registry to allow for these slow connections
- What account is the GFI service(s) running under?
- Can you log on to the system as this account, open Internet Explorer, and get to an external website?
- Can you download files while logged on as this account?
In the future, please answer the following questions regarding updates to the software before posting so we can best assist you: - Do you have a proxy server?
- Does the proxy server require authentication?
- What account is the GFI server running under?
- Are the proxy settings in Internet Explorer correct for the user account listed above?
- Can you browse the Internet from Internet Explorer when logged onto the server as the above account?
- Can you download files, or are there security permissions prevent file downloads as this account?
