I have noticed that multiple accounts in the Active Directory with the following details: Display Name: GFI LNSS Monitor Account Logon name (pre-Windows 2000 ONLY!): DOMAINNAME\$DUPLICATE-20ec Member Of: Domain Users, Administrators There are about 10 of these with minor differences after the Duplicate string on the name. The "original" LNSS account is still in position. The domain is a Windows 2003 one. Can anyone explain why this happens? Thanx

Have you installed this application in multiple places on the same domain? (Perhaps at different WAN sites?) Also, has this application been upgraded several times from earlier builds?

Yes, it is installed on three remote (different sites in the same domain) servers as well. Still this doesnt make any sense though; these users where created in the first two weeks of July 2008, whereas the prouct was installed at least for 15 months now on all servers without installing newer builds... and it was 10 additional "duplicate" users for 3 remote sites... Any more ideas about that, we need to have an explanation on this... Would it be safe to purge these users? Thank you for your instant response!

I can't say that I know why these multiple users were created then. You could change our software to use a domain admin or service account instead of our custom created accounts. (I've provided these details below.) You can verify this works by disabling all of the LNSS accounts in active directory and ensuring there is no functionality loss within the software. To move away from these users to a new domain admin account: - Set the GFI LanGuard Network Security Scanner service to logon as a domain admin account.
- Follow these instructions: http://kbase.gfi.com/showarticle.asp?id=KBID002251
