I am a user of Mail security10 and Mail Essential12 and they are deployed on one server on the Perimeter Zone (Isolated from our Domain). I am thinking of uninstalling the MES12 and upgrade it to MES14/64bit and install it on the Exchange 2007 (Member Server) so that my users can manage their own junk. Is it also sufficient to leave a hardened win2003 with GFI Mail Security10 (build 20070410) on the DMZ to trap/filter those Worms, Viruses and bad HTML? Thanks.

teekblang, Installing GFI MailEssentials 12/14 on the Exchange 2007 server is fine. You will need to configure your "Perimeter SMTP Servers" in the GFI MailEssentials configuration to know that the initial server exists. You can read more about this at http://support.gfi.com/manuals/en/me14/me14manual.1.18.html.

John... can you shed some light on this scenario for me? We currently run ME14 on a member server that is receiving our email. It IS on our domain. It takes the email and forwards it to my smarthost exchange server. From there it distributes it throughout the organization. I want to eventually move to Exchange 2007. Will the ME14 member server be able to forward mail normally if I install the first EX07 box? I keep thinking this is a chicken/egg paradox... ME14 x64 needs Ex07 running on the same server to work right? That's what all the documentation says. But EX07 is no small upgrade to a mail infrastructure. I don't want spam filtering to stop when I install the first ex07 server. Nor do I really want to install EX07 on the same box as GFI. Why wouldn't my existing ME server be able to continue sending mail to my smarthost when I install my first EX07 box? I don't get it... the manual really doesn't tell me much more than "You have to install EX07 on the same box on ME14 x64"

Ytsejamer1, Starting with GFI MailEssentials 14 you are able to run the x64 version of the software on a standalone IIS machine. You would not need Exchange 2007 installed on the same server to do this. You can find more information about this at http://kbase.gfi.com/showarticle.asp?id=KBID003400. This relay would still be able to pass messages back to your Exchange 2007 server.
