Today, I noticed that some of my emails sent to the outside weren't reaching their target (IE:  a few sent to msn.com made it, while other didnt)..

We run Exchange 2007 with the antispam agents as well as GFIMailessentials for spam.. but this really shouldn't have anything to do with outgoing emails..

When i dont receive the email on the other end.. i check the queue viewer, but dont see that email sitting there on the server waiting for a retry.. i dont see it there at all.. its like it went through..

However.. if i do message tracking on it.. I notice i have a receive eventid and storedriver source, while the very next second i have a fail on eventid and source of agent, sourcecontext is GfiAsRtRoutedAgent.

I'm not sure what is going on here..

However, I did notice that we had one user who had to send out a mass emailing the other day (to external sites). probably a good 25 different target addresses.. most had DNS/SMTP failures in the logs.. it was just after this (yesterday around 2pm) that the failures with the GFIASRTroutedAgent context started appearing..

I've restarted the transport service, things seem better at this second, but its likely to occur again...

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance

Hello Mark,

1) Did the emails that were not delivered immediately get delivered afterwards?

2) Check the <Program Files>\GFI\MailEssentials\FailedMails folder and see whether there are any emails in there.

3) What is the exact error in the event log for the GfiAsRtRoutedAgent and how many times did you get this error?

Regards

I want so say that some of the emails went through, some didnt, after i restarted the transport service.. not sure...  UPDATE.. none of these went through..

Yep there are a bunch of emails from 1/23 through 1/24 in that folder..

I didnt have any gfiasrtroutedagent errors in the event log of the system itself.. just went i did the message tracking viewer..

Any ideas what may have happened here?  Should i disable the gfi agent permanently.. what does its purpose serve.. confused as these are outgoing emails, not incoming.

Hello Mark,

No the GfiAsRtRoutedAgent should not be disabled permanently since this agent provides outbound messages to the scanning process within MailEssentials.

Emails are ending within the FailedMails folder due to something going wrong at scanning stage.

This issue is currently being handled by e-mail support. The reference number(s) used are:

CAS-50620 - markm75

We are having the exact same problem as noted above by Markm75.  I would appreciate an update to the cause or solution used in this case.

Thanks!

Thank you for the reply.  Here is our current setup:

Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise x64 bit Edition (Service Pack 2)
Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 Version: 08.01.0291.001
GFI MailEssentials for Exchange/SMTP Version 12 Build 20080326

GFI is installed on the same Server as MS Exchange.  We also have a legacy server running Exchange 2003 which still hosts some mailboxes.

I already have been answered via email support with case #: CAS-86360

Any insight you might be able to provide would be greatly appreciated.

Walter,

It looks like you were going to upgrade the build.  Has this been done yet?  If so, have you been able to see any errors regarding the transport of these messages in your event viewer?
