Indexing/Databasing Setup - 12.May2008 9:41:43 AM

In my current setup (3 Exchange servers, 3 storage groups per server, 4 stores per SG; 36 message stores total) our three archival servers are having trouble keeping up with the journaling mailboxes on each message store. The archivers each have their own server and handle retrieval, storage and indexing.

To spread out the load, would it be possible to have the following setup?:

3 archive servers per Exchange server (9 total), all archiving to the same database, but not indexing (3 databases total, 1 per Exchange server)
3 "frontend" MARC servers that just handle indexing/web interface for the 3 databases

The backlog of messages in the journaled mailboxes is forcing our incremental backups of mailboxes to take nearly 20 hours, further slowing down archival and feeding into an endless loop; I need a way to spread this out as quickly as possible.

Thanks!

Hi

Why do you have multiple journaling mailboxes for each message store for archiving.?
We have only the one journaling mailbox for 3 servers, 18 message stores plus some public folders.

Space is currently at a premium for our Exchange message stores, and consolidating all journaling to one location could easily cause us to lose a storage group should MailArchiver fail to collect the messages in time. By spreading the journaling out among the multiple message stores, we have a much larger buffer should problems occur with archival, which they have: I'm currently seeing 6-9 GB journaling mailboxes at times because the three MailArchiver servers I have in place cannot not keep up while backups are running as well (as I said, upwards of 20 hours daily). If I had put them all in one mailbox I could be looking at 324 GB tacked onto a storage group that is already in dire need of space.
