Importing addresses to whitelist - 4.Nov.2008 11:58:18 AM

I have searched for existing threads on this, but couldn't really find a definitive answer.

Basically I want to add every email address (and alias) from our Active Directory to GFI ME's whitelist.

Using a script I've extracted all 600 of them to an Excel worksheet (not CSV or tab delimited, just a standard .XLSX file with one email address per line).

I have also exported the manual entries from our current whitelist as an XML, so that I can see how it's formatted. The problem is that the addresses already in there are in this format:

<z:row entry='example@mydomain.com' type='1'/>

but the addresses in my Excel file which I need to add, are just as follows: example@mydomain.com  , so it's not as simple as just pasting the contents of my excel file into the XML file.

So is there an easy way to import these addresses into the xml file in the correct format, rather than have to type them all in? I'm sure I'm missing something obvious but it's escaping me at the moment.

Any help gratefully received. Thanks

Try this:

Step 1: open Excel
Step 2: open the exported XML file
Step 3: choose "open as read only workbook" when prompted

You will now have "z:row entry=" in one column, "example@mydomain.com" in the second column, and "type=1" in the third column.

I would then import your whitelist entries into the second comlumn and then see if you can save this as an XML file.

Hope this helps...

On a side note: I'm not sure why you are going to whitelist your own domain.  This means spam will bypass your filter since your recipients are whitelisted.  I only keep a small handful of people internally on my whitelist.  Be sure to set the type to "0" for internal users (0=MIME TO - checks emails to address).

thanks very much for your reply, that should work perfectly.

I also note your point about whitelisting internal addresses though. I'm actually new to GFI-ME as I've just started with a new company and they asked me to look at this, but I think they are possibly misunderstanding how the whitelist works - I think they assume that spam will still be filtered out even for whitelisted (incoming) addresses. But I guess that would defeat the object of the whitelist. So I will explain to them that it would be better to remove their own domain from the whitelist altogether.

thanks again for your suggestions.

Keep in mind that all this depends on the order of your spam modules.  In other words, if your whitelist is the first thing scanned, no filtering will take place for those addresses.  However if the whitelist is in the middle of the order, then some filtering will take place before it reaches the whitelist.

I have directory harvesting first (catches over 90% of the spam) and then follow it with my whitelist.

dannyboy33,

This can be done in a roundabout way from a flat text file.  Here is how to do this:

1.  Open GFI MailEssentials Configuration
2.  Open properties for Custom Blacklist
3.  Export Custom Blacklist
4.  Remove all entries from Custom Blacklist
5.  Import whitelist into the Custom Blacklist
6.  Export current Custom Blacklist to whitelist.xml
7.  Import whitelist.xml into Whitelist module
8.  Remove entries in Custom Blacklist and import original Custom Blacklist exported in step 3.
