What is the approved / supported method to complete a SQL database backup of the Main Events Manager Database?

I am currently running EM 8.1 Build number 20080318 on four 2003 Servers running SQL 2005.  Multiprocessor servers 8+ Gig RAM with only EM running on it.  Anti-Virus is not scanning EM file folder or databases.  I cannot send you any logs.

I have scheduled a sql job complete the following Steps:

1. net stop "GFI Eventsmanager"
2. run sql backup
3. net start "GFI Eventsmanager"

For the net stop or net start processes, sql makes a call the cmd line in step 1 and 3 as listed above.  90% of the time the commands execute and reports failure.  Although it reports failure sometimes the GFI Events Manager service starts or stops in accordance to the command.  In a sql job typically when a job step fails you have the job set to stop and fail.  I can duplicate the cmd call issue outside of a sql job from the cmd line directly.  I have tried to complete sql flat file backups without stopping the service back in EM7 2006 builds and the database didn't like this.  EM would start throwing errors.  From a history aspect, issue described above has been happening since the EM7 2006 builds for me but before EM 8.1 it was happening about 1 time every 3-4 months.  Now it happens daily.  From talking to support I am not the only customer.  Please provide some direction.

Thank you

One option would be to monitor the net stop command for failures, when it has failed, use an application like PSKill to terminate the esmproc.exe file manually.  This will terminate the GFI EventsManage service, although not gracefully.  This process would not be supported by GFI, but should work in your scenario.

So I have two questions. . .
  1. What is the approved / supported method to complete a SQL database backup of the Main Events Manager Database?
  2. Is there a problem with the GFI Service? (Is this reproducable from outside of my environment)

I have not heard of any other cases regarding this service issue.

The official recommendation if you are backing up your SQL database would be, as you are trying to perform, to stop the GFI EventsManager service, backup the database, and then restart the service.
