I am running my MA install on a virtual machine. This VM is riding on top of a large VMware vSphere install. The host servers are all dual quad core AMD 2.5GHz or 2.8GHz servers w/ 16GB physical memory/ea. All VMs reside on a fibre channel SAN. My MA VM (separate from Exchange) has the following specs: Single processor, W2k3, 4GB Memory, 2 Hard Disks, Latest OS Patches, Latest MA Build, M$ SQL 2005. The OS and GFI install files are located on the C drive. The GFI index files AND M$ SQL DBs are both located on the D drive. I'm indexing files immediately and am synchronizing folder structure. I split my MA DBs annually as I am only archiving for 55 users. The current DB (2009) is 35GB in size (324k messages), with an index size of 1.8GB. My MA install feels slow when searching or browsing folder structure. My first thought was to move the index files to their own drive but thought I would check here first to save myself some work if something else could be the problem.
