**Important notification for ALL GFI MailSecurity 10 customers**

The GFI MailSecurity optional AVG anti-virus engine makes use of specific files which need to be updated periodically. These files are included with the updates for the AVG Virus Scanning Engine.  If the AVG files are not updated by 15 June 2009, GFI MailSecurity 10 will no longer load the AVG virus scanning engine, and this will cause the scanning of all emails to be delivered to the GFI FailedMail folder and emails will not be delivered to end-users.  There will be no data loss.

Information on how to prevent this from happening is provided below.

Who is affected?

All GFI MailSecurity 10 customers, including customers who did not opt to purchase the AVG engine updates, can potentially be affected by this problem.
GFI MailSecurity 10 Service Release 9 Build: 20090526 is not affected by this situation. To determin which build you have, click the GFI MailSecurity > Version Information node.

How can I verify if I am affected?
You can verify if you are affected as follows:
  1. Open the GFI MailSecurity configuration
  2. Change to ‘Virus Scanning Engines’ -> ‘AVG Anti-Virus’

  3. On the General tab, check the ‘Virus database release date’

  4. If the ‘Virus database release date’ is more recent than ‘2009/05/18 06:28’, your installation is NOT affected by the problem. No further action is needed.
  5. If the ‘Virus database release date’ is equal to or older than ‘2009/05/18 06:28’, your installation is affected by the AVG engine issue.

I am affected. What should I do?
You must follow one of the following courses of action:
  • If you have purchased AVG updates, and the AVG virus scanning engine is still licensed, you should download the latest AVG update from the GFI update servers. The update can be initiated by performing the following:
    1. Open the GFI MailSecurity Configuration.
    2. Expand ‘Virus Scanning Engines’ and select ‘AVG Anti-Virus’

    3. Click on the ‘Updates’ tab
    4. Click on the ‘Download Updates’ button

  • If you have not purchased AVG updates, you may still be affected by the problem, as the AVG engine may still be enabled after the GFI MailSecurity Evaluation expired. In this case, completely disable the AVG virus scanning engine by completing the following actions:
    1. Open the GFI MailSecurity configuration
    2. Expand ‘Virus Scanning Engines’ and select ‘AVG Anti-Virus’
    3. Click on the General Tab and uncheck the ‘Enable Gateway Scanning (SMTP)’ option

      Note
:  If you are running GFI MailSecurity on your Microsoft Exchange server, you must uncheck the ‘Enable Information Store Scanning (VSAPI)’ option.

  • Alternatively, you may instead choose to upgrade to GFI MailSecurity 10 Service Release 9 Build: 20090526, which includes the updated files, and therefore is not affected by the problem described above. The x86 version of GFI MailSecurity can be downloaded from http://www.gfi.com/mailsecurityx86/download. The x64 version of GFI MailSecurity can be downloaded from http://www.gfi.com/mailsecurityx64/download.

I did not purchase AVG updates. Why am I affected?
During the evaluation of GFI MailSecurity, all the virus scanning engines are enabled. When you purchase GFI MailSecurity, you can opt not to purchase the optional virus scanning engines, one of which is the AVG Virus Scanning engine. In this case, the optional virus scanning engines become dormant; they are still enabled, but are not scanning emails.
To avoid this problem, you must completely disable the AVG Virus Scanning engine as described above.

What happens on 16 June 2009?
Tuesday 16 June 2009 is the date when the AVG ‘Virus database release date’ needs to be more recent than ‘2009/05/18 06:28’. If this is not the case, the engine must be disabled or GFI MailSecurity 10 Service Release 9 Build: 20090526 must be installed before that date.
In the event that the engine is not disabled and GFI MailSecurity 10 Service Release 9 Build: 20090526 is not installed and the AVG ‘Virus database release date’ is older than ‘2009/05/18 06:28’, all emails processed by GFI MailSecurity will fail to be processed. The emails will not be lost but will be stored in the <GFI\ContentSecurity\MailSecurity\FailedMails> folder.
They can be recovered once you have either updated with the latest AVG updates or disabled the AVG virus scanning engine in GFI MailSecurity or installed GFI MailSecurity 10 Service Release 9 Build: 20090526, as explained above. KBID003263 explains how to recover emails that have failed to be processed by GFI MailSecurity.

Are emails lost?
No, emails are not lost. If you are affected by this issue, emails received after 15 June 2009 will be stored in the <GFI\ContentSecurity\MailSecurity\FailedMails> folder.  KBID003263 explains how to recover emails that have failed to be processed by GFI MailSecurity.
