GFI not blocking mobile phones (USB Storage) Wednesday, July 08, 2015 4:15 PM (permalink)
Hi,

We recently noticed a problem with our deployment of GFI ESEC. Although we have blocked storage media access, the users are still able to connect  their mobile phones (Android, Windows Phone and iPhone) through the USB as it detects it as storage media.
This is not for users who aren't part of any of the GFI group also. The mobile phones when connected in USB as storage devices show up as part of OtherDevices in GFI rather than StorageDevices.
How can we resolve this issue? Is this a bug or a misconfiguration.
Kind Regards,
TGBoy

    Hi,

I have the same problem. When I connect my Nexus4, the first time is denied but the second one it is allowed:

Removable device connected:        Users: darot       Device: MTP USB Device        Device Information:        Description: Port_#0007.Hub_#0004        Category: Other Devices        System Class: WPD        Connectivity Port: USB        Vendor ID: 18D1        Product ID: 4EE5        Serial: 01B3E3E1D891xxxx

Do you know why could be this problem? I do not want to permit anyone to connect to the system with their mobile devices.

Thank you very much in advance,
    tgboy

        Hi,
This seems quite a complex issue. I would advise you to open a support ticket:

                Hello keerthi,

For this type of issue you will want to open a support ticket.

As many others experiencing this issue I filed the ticket. The answer was:

                Hello,

I would suggest you scan the computer the device is plugged in on while it is plugged in, then create a policy permission for that device that is block access fully.

                Thanks,

I consider that answer as joke. The truth is - you guys don't release new bugfixed versions since 2014.04.01 so the product support is dead :(

Also it doesn't block webcameras (other devices). I tried on Logitech C270. It says access is denied but it perfectly works in Skype.
                Found more bugs:
                1. It won't accept cyrillic user name when you install it, you need to fool it by setting any english username and after it is installed you need to go to services and set desired cyrillic username there in service properties.
                2. It doesn't see connection of storage devices on USB 3.0 ports. It reports them as not connected but can't control etc. For example devices with installed UAS driver.
                3. It doesn't support SSL SMTP protocol in email settings (nowadays all servers require this), so email features of the product are pretty useless :(

You guys need to fix all this to make this product the best. If you need tester I will gladly help as for now your QA staff is not making their work properly xD
