I am planning an upgrade to the latest version of Events Manager, which I believe is 8.1. Currently I am running Version 7.1, which I believe is Build 20070328. I have avoided upgrading since the last two times have not gone smoothly and I have actually had lost two databases in the past. What would be the best practice in this case for me to follow. I do have a backup file of all the customization I have done in my current version, which was generated by an export through GFI itself. Thank you.

This is a very good question. Many of us have had the same experience. What is the latest "best practice" to follow in order to upgrade from 7 to 8?

I have actually just pieced together a reasonably good best practice for the upgrade to EventsManager 8.1. I found a very knowledgable fellow at GFI and he actually sent me a set of very easy and straightforward instructions. I can post them if anyone needs them.

Here Are The Upgrade Instructions. They Worked Well For Me: Here's the procedure to upgrade to GFI EventsManager 8: 1. Download EventsManager8.exe from ftp.gfi.com. 2. Upgrade your key(s) on our customer site: (Procedure is shown below) 3. Export your current configuration for safety by choosing File -> Import and Export Configuration...(this cannot be imported into version 8 but "just in case" you could install version 7 again and import it). In addition to this, it will leave behind you EventsManager 7.1 Data folder renamed Data - Old which also contains your original version 7 configuration. 4. Run the executable. It will uninstall the previous build/version, leave the file structure in place, and reinstall (importing your configuration if you choose to). No reboot is necessary. *****Note: If you want to make sure you can still use your old version 7 database and revert to it if necessary with a version 7 re-install, do the following ****** 1. Prior to upgrading, stop the EventsManager service, and create a new database set in the Configuration -> Options -> Database Backend -> Change Database Backend -> and change the name of the database and click OK. 2. With the EventsManager Service stopped, run the upgrade procedure - it will up then upgrade the new databases. 3. Once you have verified everything is in order with the configuration, switch to the original database in the Configuration -> Options -> Database Backend -> Change Database Backend. It will upgrade the primary and backup databases to version 8. Upgrading your key: 1. Go to our customer area on our site: https://customers.gfi.com/login.aspx 2. Login with your credentials. 3. Expand the My keys section, expand your current key and click the upgrade link to produce a new key for <YOUR PRODUCT> (the key can only be used w/ the new version). Upgrading the Report Pack: 1. Download EventsManager8rp.exe from ftp.gfi.com. (if you don't have Version 7 of the report pack download and install ReportCenter35.exe first). 2. Run the EventsManager8rp.exe installer. 3. You will then have both reportpacks installed (versions 7 & 8). You will have to recreate any custom or scheduled reports. Until this is done, the version 7 reports will still work with the version 8 database until you get the custom and scheduled reports in version 8 configured.
