I'm also having problems w/ Email Alerts, Windows Popups is working tho.
My colleague was able to get them to work but I've been pulling my hair out for this one! Like U said, test messages work fine.

One common reason for this is that the users setup to be alerted have email address / domains that our OUTSIDE of your local network.  Your email server may feel like these messages are an attack to test your server for its relay settings, and refuse to send out the messages.  Try this simple test: Ensure that all users that are to receive alerts have an e-mail address within the domain.

I didn't have any problem w/ EventsManager and NSM and am using an outside smtp gateway to relay mails.

Many times this is allowed, only if you are authenticating to your smtp server.

Let's forget email alert for a while & pls allow me to disgress to Protection Policies. Pls confirm ESEC v4 20080215 have no issues w/ Protection Policies --> Security using Domain\Group object.
For example: test.local\Administrators does not have any effect whatsoever. I had to add the user object administrator in the policy in order to allow full acces.
