Email Alerts Fail - 24.Jul.2008 5:02:27 AM

This appears to be an issue for a few people and i have raised a call with support but i've often found forums to be helpful.

Basically the test email works fine but the email that should be generated by the alert failing does not.  I have even run a network sniffer and at no point does NSM even try to send an email when an alert fires.

If anyone has any ideas, it would be greatly appreciated.

When troubleshooting alert issues we want to check the following:

  1. Are the test email and alert email going to the same address?
  2. Do any of the alerts get sent to external addresses (i.e. cellphones?)
  3. Right click on the server folder that contains the alerts and choose properties.  Check the alerts tab that email alerts are selected to be sent.
  4. Open the properties of the user and ensure that email alerts are selected to be sent out.
  5. Lastly, watch the Activity Monitor (a separate application from the Start menu) and check for any errors when a test fails.

Hi DrewE

Thanks for responding.

1 - Yes they are the same address
2 - No, purely setup for email
3 - Yes email alerts are set to be sent (all inherited - but just to test, i setup a seperate alert for a service stopping and specifically set it within the properties on the actions tab
4 - User properties are set to send email
5 - I've watched the activity monitor.  The only errors showing are the failed alerts.  There is nothing to suggest it tried to send an email as a result and got an error there.

Cheers

When these alerts fail, are they alerts that have been in a 'failed' status for quite some time?  During troubleshooting here, we typically force a check to fail, watch the activity monitor to see if any email alerts are generated, then cause the check to succeed again.

Typically, the disk space check set to scan every 5 seconds with an 'consider the check failed after 1 error' should work.

Again, the activity monitor should indicate once a check has failed that an email alert was sent successfully, was sent but an error occurred, or you see nothing indicating this is a configuration issue with the software.

As a last resort, restarting the GFI Network Server Monitor services sometimes help.

Hey Drew

I have purposefully left an alert in a failed state (drivespace) and no email was sent.  I just tested with a service stopped alert, the failed state showed up in the monitor but no subsequent mention of emails failed or otherwise.  It is also set to email when the state returns to successful but again, no email.

The monitor service has been restarted, as indeed has the server.  It's quite bizarre!

thanks

It seems we've covered all of the basic configuration settings.  I would recommend opening a support ticket at http://support.gfi.com so we could review some log files.

Hey Drew

The issue is currently raised with GFI Support but so far, they seem to be as baffled as i am as to why the software doesnt even appear to be trying to send an email.
