As a new MA6 user, I am curious what different options there are for data recovery should the worst happen. If I'm using an SQL + NTFS database set up and I lose the SQL database, can I recover the data from just the binary files? Or vice versa if all I have available is the SQL database? If I lose one, do my users lose the ability to search the archives until recovered? I would prefer to be full SQL for the databases but I cannot afford the full version and the 4GB limit on SQL Express will not work unless I make a database for every month of every year. The SQL database portion will be backed up, as well as the binaries. However, the backup will be nightly so I could potentially lose up to 24 hours worth of email unless I can recover the data with only one of the two pieces. (SQL data or binaries on NTFS)

You sound new to SQL as well! If you choose not to use the full version of SQL then I think it is going to make your life a bit difficult. You really don't want to be archiving one month and then discover that your database has reached the 4GB limit. I'm not sure what you mean by losing up to 24hours of data if you archive monthly? Do you mean email data in Exchange?

It is true that I would prefer to use the full version of SQL but with its price tag, that simply is not an option. I have taken into account the 4GB limit on Express version databases. That is why I am using the option of mixed SQL and NTFS because the binary files consume too much of the 4GB limit. Using the mixed mode will allow me to archive based on Quarterly databases and remain under the 4GB limit. If I start to see we are getting too close to the 4GB I can switch to the Firebird database for future Quarters. So, presently the SQL portion of the data is on an attached USB disk with no redundancy. The Binary files reside on a NAS with disk redundancy. I am backing up the SQL portion to this NAS with my current backup solution. The backup takes place nightly so that is where I could potentially lose up to 24 hours of archive by restoring the backup from the previous night. All of this being said, I still have the original question of: What are my options for restoring the mixed (SQL and NTFS) archive databases if I only had access to either the SQL portion or only the Binary portion on NTFS? Thanks!

SQL 2005 Express has the 4 GB database size limit applied only to data files and not to log files. However, there are no limits to the number of databases that can be attached to the server. Cheers
