Custom patch deployment with .bat problem - 17.Jul.2008 12:59:57 PM

I'm deploying non-MS patches to remote PCs across WAN links using batch files. The actual patch install packages are located on servers across the WAN link. The batch files are deployed to the remote PCs via NSS, copies the patch from its closest server and then the batch file runs the executable to install the patch. That all works great except for one problem. When I first start the deployment of these very, very small batch files (200-300 bytes) I often received the following error in Deployment Status on some of the first couple of sessions/threads:

“Failed to copy local.bat – error 32: The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process”.. and the thread fails.

It appears the deployment threads are butting heads trying to grab a copy of the batch file to deploy. Once the deployment really gets going it happens less often because subsequent new threads naturally become staggered, but if I try to start 5 threads initially sometimes 2 or 3 will fail. They don't retry so I have to track these manually and redeploy. Then on a second attempt I have the same problem occur.

I've reduced the number of deployment threads down to 3, so I have fewer of these, but it's still a pain.

Any workarounds?

Thanks.

Do you have any anti-virus software running on the GFI machine?  If so, please consider disabling it to see if it is causing this trouble You may also want to examine procmon.exe or filemon.exe from Microsoft SysInternals when deploying this software.  You may find another process (anti-virus, backup, etc) is locking onto the batch file as its deployed by GFI.  As far as I'm aware, we are performing a straight copy of the file, and should not be locking the file.

I think you are right. I exempted the local directory where the .bat files are located from the realtime AV monitoring and the contention problem went away.

[edit] Actually, I thought this solved the problem, but it didn't. It's not my AV.

Thanks.
