I'm a noobie with GFI Mailarchiver v4. So this may be a simple fix.

I'm trying to connect our remote Exchange server to the archive. When I try to login using the administrator account, I receive this error:

"System error: No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it"

The live support person said to check if IMAP is enabled on the Exchange server. When IMAP is enable, I received this error:

"IMAP protocol error. 1 NO Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.."

Any help with resolving this issue will be greatly appreciated.

Do I set the username format on the Exchange server or during the Mail Server Wizard?

When trying to “Adding a remote Microsoft Exchange mail server” to GFI MailArchiver.
On page “Select the Provider you want use to connect to the journaling mailbox” when you click next after specifying all correct information required, you may received and error

“System error: No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it”

Resolution

Logon to Exchange Server

Click Start and then Run
Type Services.msc and then click Ok, Services windows will open.
Locate the “Microsoft Exchange IMAP4” service
Right Click on “Microsoft Exchange IMAP4” service and select Properties.
Under General tab from the Startup type dropdown box select Automatic and then click apply
Under General tab >> Service status: click on Start button and then click OK

Go back to GFI MailArchiver Server
Perform the steps specified in the GFI MailArchiver manual on page 70-72

djohnson,

Enter the credentials in the format "domain\username" within the MailServer Wizard.

Thank you

I followed the steps that afridi provided. When I tried to connect again, I received this error:

"IMAP protocol error. 1 NO Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.."

Then I tried the step that Mark Busuttil provided using the format 'domain\username' Then I received this error:

IMAP protocol error. 1 BAD Protocol Error: "Invalid string supplied for user name"..

I'm open to more suggestions of how to resolve this issue. Thank you for your help so far.

Hi

If you have more than one SMTP domain/virtual server hosted on your Exchange then you should also try email address or user@domain (if different) as well.
I can suggest to use Outlook Express to connect to this mailbox via IMAP to simplify the testing process

I tried using an email address or user@domain as the login format, and I got the "unknown user name or bad password" error. I didnt check to see if I have more than one SMTP domain/virtual server hosted on our Exchange server yet (I may need some assistance on how to do so).

Also, I talked to a GFI Live Support technician and he said I should try using the name of my mailbox as the login name. This is the error I received:

IMAP protocol error. 1 NO Logon failure: account currently disabled..

Could that be the problem? And if so, how do I enable the mailbox acccount?

I was finally able to get the mail archiver to connect to our mail server. These were the two main causes:
  1. I was using our domain administrator login when I should have been using our mailbox login (named Journal2)
  2. The IMAP service for the Journal2 account was disable and needed to be enable

Once those changes were made, the connection was successful. Thank you to everyone that helped me out and I hope my situation helps others in the future.
