When I configure the database options in EM 7 (i.e. entered SQL server name and database name), I get the "Database changed successfully" dialog box, but when I "OK" out of the Database Options, the Database Backend Status still displays "Database server not configured". I tried uninstalling and reinstalling just EM 7, then went as far as to uninstall and reinstall MSDE 2000. Still get the same results. I'm running XP with SP2 and MSDE with SP4.

Hi, Please check if the SQL Server service is running and use the refresh funcitonality in the Events manager Monitor. What type of authentication are you using? Best regards, Calin

Calin, Yes, the SQL Server service is running and I have tried refreshing. When I configure the database options and I get the "Database changed successfully" dialog box, the Database Options box displays the the correct info for "Current database settings". If I OK out of Database Options and then go back in to view the options, the "Current database settings" are blank. I am using Windows authentication. Any other advice would be greatly appreciated. I called GFI and their advice was to reload EM, which of course I've already tried.

ok, What I think happens is the following: 1. You are doing the database configuration being logged on with a user which has enough rights to access the SQL Server /MSDE. 2. The EventsManager service runs under credentials which do not have enough rights to access the database. As a result the UI reports back that the service is unable to connect to the database. By default, MSDE 2000 is installed using mixed mode authentication - that is SQL authentication and Windows authentication. By default, the Administrator user has sa login rights, this is why you might have been able to configure the database while being logged on with such a user. UI runs in the security context of the user running it and hence has enough rights to create the database. Service runs under another user account, or may be even Local System account which DO NOT have rights to access the SQL Server. Read SQL server books online to find out more about how authentication works. To fix the problem Either Use SQL Authentication when creating the database and provide the sa login with the blank password (if MSDE 2000 install did not ask you for a sa password) or the password you entered when installing MSDE (if asked). Or Have the EventsManager service run under the same credentials which you used when you created the database fromt he EventsManager UI (i.e Admin account). Best regards, Calin

EventsManager service was already configured to log in with local admin account, which is the same account I was logged in with when I created the database from the EventsManager UI. SQLSERVER service is configured to log in with Local System account.

Has there been any more resolution to this issue? I am having the exact same issue except on a Windows 2003 Domain controller. The firewall is not on, I have tried SQL Server 2000 Standard, and SQL Server 2005 MSDE as a backend, with the same results. I have tried installing SQL in both mixed and windows Auth modes. No Matter what I do, it is the same result. Events Manager successfully creates the database but does not keep the connection information, and I tells me the service isn't configured after I am finished. Please help. Alex - Avineon

GFI EventsManager 7 is a very old product, and as such no longer supported, however it does appear your install may not be fully patched. Before proceeding with these steps, make a complete copy of C:\Program Files\GFI\EventsManager in case something goes wrong as we will not be able to assist you with any critical failures with these steps: There are two patches that may not have been applied in your environment: This one, which should be applied first: http://software.gfi.com/patches/ESM7/20070503/ESM7.1_PATCH_20071026_01.zip And this one, applied next: http://software.gfi.com/patches/ESM7/20071026/ESM71_PATCH_20080226_01.zip These patches should bring GFI EventsManager up to build 20071026 - which may correct this issue.

Drew, I have applied both patches and now have a revision of Version: 7.1.1 Build:20071026 But I am experiencing the exact same symptoms. I configured the back end db everything looks successful, after I hit OK it looks like it is still not configured.

avineon, As Drew already mentioned, this version of Eventsmanager is quite old and not supported by GFI anymore. If you'd like us to investigate this issue further please upgrade to Eventsmanager 8.2 and let us know if the issue persists. Note: You will need a valid license key with Software Maintenance Agreement to upgrade your installation. If you're not sure about your current license, kindly contact sales@gfi.com. Thank you.
