I have downloaded the latest version and for some reason the CD+DVD option is grayed out so I can`t choose it.
Seems to make no difference if I put a DVD in or not.
I am able to access the DVD through other programs so I can`t figure out why the issue.

Anyone have any ideas.

Thanks,
Gary

Hi Gary,

Can you tell me please what DVD unit model do you have? Maybe you can send to us a screenshot of your device manager (Start > Control Panel > System> Device Manager) with DVD/CD-ROM expanded.
Also, I need more details about your task.
Please send me the GBT and LOG files of your task.
You can find more on how to do that here.

The DVD model I have is a TSSTcorp DVD+-RW TS-T633A ATA ... it is the unit that it is installed on my Dell Studio laptop.
I am running Vista 64-bit.

I can't send you any log files as there aren't any. I haven't as yet created or run a task since I want to create a task to backup to DVD and it is grayed out.

Thanks.
Gary

Hi Gary,

I suggest you try a new backup task with destination on removable disk device. In this case please see if you can or not select your dvd +/- RW from the "Please select the drive" combo box. I'll wait your result on this. Until then we will investigate why your dvd +/- RW is not seen like an active destination.

Thank you.

I tried it exactly as you suggested, but was unable to choose my DVD as the drive.

I was able to see the drive if I chose to Browse to a folder (in the next line), however, even with selecting the path of E:\ it would not work. I got a message saying that the destination was not available. I had a blank DVD-R in the drive throughout the creation of the task.

Thanks.
Gary

Hello Gary,

What operating system are you using ?

Please try the following steps:
-if you are using an limited Windows account, try to logon with an administrator account, create new backup task and see if teh CD/DVD option is still grayed out in the "Destination" tab.
-try to burn the same CD/DVD using another program (nero, roxio, etc) and see if they detect your CD/DVD-RW unit and if they can write a CD/DVD

Let me know what are the results of the above operations, and if all fails, I'll try to give you more advanced suggestions.

My O/S is Vista Home Premium 64-bit.

I am logged in with my user account and it is set up as an Administrator.

I tried CDBurner XP to burn the DVD and it shows that there are no compatible devices. I didn't even think to check that since I know I burned a disc awhile ago with it and it worked.

I used Roxio Creator DE and I was able to burn my DVD.

Is the CD/DVD selection in GFI supposed to be available only if there is media in the drive?

Thanks.
Gary

Hy Gary,

Tell me please when you burn your last DVD with Roxio, before or after the problem with GFI Home BAckup 2009.

Towards your question, the CD\DVD selection is available with or without writable media in the drive.

I'll waiting your reply, Thank you.

I did a test burn to DVD as Eugen requested, hence, it was after the GFI install.
I have already installed and re-installed GFI 3 times to see if that had any issues and it did not.

Are there any known software or hardware conflicts with GFI at this time that could be causing the issue?

I installed the same version on another Vista 64-bit machine I have and it allows me to select the CD/DVD so my assumption is that there is either a software or hardware conflict or the software cannot recognize my DVD.

Thanks.
Gary

Hi Gary,

Can you send a list of software installed please? Normally there are no incompatibilities with other programs, but I want to check. You can send the list at the mail adrress from here.

Thank you

Hi Gary,
We've tried several similar backup tasks as you described and found no issues regarding the backup on CD/DVD drives. Unfortunately we couldn't test an identical CD/DVD drive as your own.
I think you should try am firmware upgrade for your optical drive. You can find the upgrade on Dell's website here: http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R231599&SystemID=studio1737&servicetag=5XT2ZH1&os=WV64&osl=en&deviceid=16566&devlib=0&typecnt=0&vercnt=3&catid=-1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=32&fileid=333199
If this doesn't work you should try several options provided by your laptop manufacturer. You can find those here: http://en.community.dell.com/forums/t/19240923.aspx. You have there a troubleshooting wizard and an optical drive test.
I hope this works for you.
