Hi,

We are running Mailarchiver 4 build 20070616 on exchanger server 2003.

I recently noticed that on one of the archive stores the stastics page contains no values at all.

e.g.

quote:

Archive Store Name:
Archive Store Type:
Archive Store created on:
First email archived on: N/A
Last email archived on: N/A
Archive store contains: 0 emails

Server:
Database:
Database size:

Path to search index: N/A
Search index size: N/A
Indexed emails: N/A

Allow user browsing and searching:
Allow further archiving:

The database seems to still be searchable and functional however.

So far I have tried re-applying the settings for the store in question on the Archive Stores page and also rebuilt the search index, however the statistics page still has no values.

Any ideas?

thanks,

Alex

Ok, further to this it seems the rebuild of the index never completed so the situation is now this:

1) Index says 'Rebuilding', however the index files stopped growing after about two hours. It looks like the indexing process just stopped after 2 hours. No errors in event log. As the index never finished rebuilding we can no longer search the store.
2) Trying to browse the store in question gives error: "Error: 3158: QueryFailed"
3) There are still no values in the statistics page for the store

Fortunately this isn't the active store so no new emails are going to it, however we still need to be able to search it!

Hello Alex,

Do you have all patches applied to GFI MailArchiver 4?  These patches are described in http://kbase.gfi.com/showarticle.asp?id=KBID003218.

If you have a valid Software Maintenance Agreement, we recommend to upgrade to the latest GFI MailArchiver 5 Service Release 1.  In this version we added a lot of optimisations to Search and includes all patches mentioned in the kb above.

Thanks for using GFI products.  Kind regards,
Joseph D'Emanuele

Joseph,

Thanks for the reply. I have been able to get this store running again by restoring the database and index from backups. Fortunately a) I had backups and b) it was the 2008 1st Quarter store and so hasn't changed since March. I am guessing the problem was some sort of database corruption?

I did the following:

To clear 'Rebuilding' status

1.  Stop the GFI MailArchiver Store service
2.  Move the updatescache.fdb out of Store\Cache (C:\Program Files\GFI\MailArchiver\Store\Cache)
3.  Restart the GFI MailArchiver Store service.

Then

1. Stopped the Mail Archiver Search service
2. Renamed both the Database and Index folders for the store in question
3. Restored Database and Index folders from backup
4. Restarted the Mail archiver Search service

We do have a maintenance agreement, so I will take your advice and upgrade to version 5 as soon as possible.

regards,

Alex

Well, we've had another corrupted database this morning.

Unfortunately this time it's the live one where mail is being archived.

Error: 3158: Data Access Layer: Query failed. Additional info: I/O error for file CreateFile (open) "D:\Archive\Databases\2008 - Q2\2008 - Q2.FDB" Error while trying to open file

I get this error whilst trying to search, or whilst trying to reapply the archive stores settings.

Is there a utility available to repair corrupted databases? If I have to restore this one from backup we lose 24 hours worth of mail from the archive.

Not happy.

Do you have any antivirus software running on the same server as GFI MailArchiver, its very possible this software can be hindering our software's ability to access the database.  You should make sure this is properly excluded or even disabled to see if this is causing an issue.

This include any database and index locations that may be stored elsewhere.

Matthew,

Thanks for the response, but unfortunately it was definitely database corruption. I used Firebird's gfix tool and it identified a corrupt database but was unable to fix it. I had to restore from backups again.

Basically all the binary and index files are still there, however the .FDB file is 24 hours earlier (restored from backup). Is there any way to rebuild the fdb database from the binary files?

It seems that the entire store is at the mercy of one large fdb file. If that gets corrupted then the store is goosed. Not necessarily a problem on a non-active store that can be restored from tape, but a nightmare on the live store where mail is being currently archived to.

Alex,

If you do have any antivirus software running on this server please make sure you do have D:\Archive\* excluded from these scans.  This could potentially be causing the corruption you are seeing.
