This may or may not be the best place to post, but I am hoping someone may have had a similar problem. We have upgraded our Small Business Server to a full windows server and have since then had to move the Small Business Server install of ISA to a new server. In doing so we have an issue with Auto Updates on MailEssentials. The Exchange Server can manually update without a problem, but for some reason the Automatic downloads are still attempting to access the old proxy which was installed on our SBS server and not the new ISA Proxy Server. How can I tell GFI Mail Essentials or the Exchange Server to use the new Proxy Server details? I have already tried using a different user account for GFI MailEssentials Mail Attendant Service with no luck. Your help is greatly appreciated! Phil

I think I've seen a proxy setting somewhere in the ME12 registry key, so that's probably the next place you should look.

well, i am told that it uses the proxy settings for the default user... which i have looked up in the registry and it is using the old proxy server, but everytime i change it, it refers back to the old proxy server again. I am having no luck! Does any one know how i can change the proxy settings for the default user permanently?

pjscott13, You would need to log in as the default user and change the IE proxy settings. You can use runas to do this as well. You would need to use runas to open Internet Explorer as the user in question. You can read more regarding runas at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc781769.aspx.

The proxy settings for the default user are in HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Explorer - are these the ones you're changing? If they keep resetting, then it's possible that your hive isn't unloading correctly. In this case, Click HKEY_USERS then File/Load Hive, Select \Documents and Settings\Default User\ntuser.dat and load it. Give it a name that you can identify, then browse down the tree and change the settings. Go back to the HKEY_USERS\MyHiveName, click File/Unload Hive. Exit Regedit and go back in, and check that the .DEFAULT now has the correct settings. If this still doesn't work, make sure you don't have the "old" ISA client installed on the server - this will over-ride practically anything! If it is necessary, uninstall it and reinstall the correct one. Don't overwrite the default user's ntuser.dat with a live user's ntuser.dat, as you'll end up putting an unusual amount of crud in the default profile, which you'll probably regret later on! Also check your group policies aren't specifying proxy settings. This can be a per-machine setting in the computer section. Looking back through this, I've probably dealt with these options in reverse order. You can't log in as the "default user".

I just reviewed my notes and I was incorrect... GFI have told me that it uses the Local System account. So i have gone into the registry to change the proxy details under BOTH Default User and S-1-5-18 and still both will not keep the new proxy server details. I am sure I have removed all Group Policy settings referring to the old proxy server and updated it with the new proxy server. I will check this again however. Also, I have not installed the Firewall client on any of my servers. So having an old version is certainly not the issue.

After speaking with GFI, they have suggested that I export the settings using meconfigmgr.exe then completely uninstall Mail Essentials and then re-install... At some point during the install it should ask to enter proxy settings? then once the install is complete, import the settings using meconfigmgr.exe again. Does anyone see any potential problems with this?

Worth a go! Don't be surprised if you still have the same issue though; something like this is surely in the configuration you're backing up and restoring.

Well, that didn't end up working! I stopped all the GFI Services as well as the IIS Admin Service, exported the config, uninstalled, Renamed the old GFI MailEssentials folder in the Program Files folder. Restarted, re-installed and no there is no Proxy Settings option during the install, and re-imported all the settings. Problem still exists. Any other ideas?

ME gets the proxy settings from the IE settings of the user that has logged on. you might have to enter the new proxy settings explicitly becasue I don't think that ME would be smart enough to get the correct proxy settings if it says there "detect settings automatically".

Hi Spidermouse, It is true that ME gets it's Internet settings from the user that is logged on, because when I open the Configuration tool and download the updates manually it works fine. My user account has the right proxy settings in IE. The problem is with the Automatic updates (which could occur when no user is logged in). I am told ME uses the Local System account to download updates Automatically, but I cannot change the proxy settings for the Local System account. Whenever I attempt to change the registry settings in HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-18\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Explorer the setting revert back to the old proxy server... every time!
