I have a very large collection (200,000+) of very small files (1 - 50KB most of them). I installed GFI Backup and created an Incremental backup to an LAN location. I started the task, and after it has processed around 47000 files it gave me an 'Out of Memory' error and stopped the backup. I still had 1GB of RAM available (from a total of 4GB), and the hard disk still had around 30GB of space available. Do you have any ideas why it could have happened?

Hello twinpawer. I assume that you have selected ZIP compression in your backup task. The first thing that you should try is to lower the compression level of the ZIP. To do that, edit your task, go to "Options" tab and under "Compression Settings" set the "Quality" slider to "Low". If you still get the same error, you could split your task into more smaller task, each task having as source a few folders containing a total of about 40.000 files. If all fails, you can select "No compression", instead of "Use Zip Compression".

Yes, I did select ZIP compression with highest level of compression and 1GB of split size. I'll try to do your suggestions. All in all, its got a nice interface and seems to be pretty fast and would really like to start using it. Can I install it on a Windows Server?

For now, GFI Backup 2009 works only on non-server editions of Microsoft Windows operatings systems. A business version of this program should be released in the future, and that version will support all major Microsoft Windows operating systems, including the server editions.

I have tried with setting the ZIP compression to lower. I also did a full count of the folder and it is over 800,000 files. These are mostly code files, and hence are highly-compressible. I would much prefer if I can use ZIP compression for the backup. I an able to package all the contents in one zip file using either 7ZIP or WinRAR, the resulting file being around 60GB containing over 1,000,000 files. I still cannot understand why it is giving an out of memory error when I have loads of RAM available. I'm trying with the 'No Compression' setting right now
