I am unable to configure the database settings for EventsManager. I have both the GFi application and SQL Server Express runing on the same box, both installed using the step by step instructions from the website. Whenever I try to configure the database it gets to the stage "check if database exists" then gives the error "Failed to connect to the SQL server". The behavior is the same whether I use windows authentication or the sa username and password. I've tried using the computername, local host, 127.0.0.1, and its publice IP address.

Anyone else seen this?

It might be the case that the named instance is not correct for your SQL 2005 Express. Please check that the server is specified in the format COMPUTERNAME\INSTANCENAME. By default this would be <COMPUTERNAME>\SQLEXPRESS.

If you don’t know what the instance name is, you can run the command "sqlcmd –L" in command prompt to display the list of servers.

Let us know if that helped.

I tried adding the servername and backslash to the database blank to no avail. I alst tried the sqlcmd you suggested and it shows the machine on the list of servers, but just by machine name (servername as opposed to servername\sqlexpress). I told it to create the named instance during setup, but it appears not to have done so. Is there a way to do that manually? Uninstalling and reinstalling SQL express had no effect.

Well in that case it seems that your SQL Server has not been setup correctly. Please take a look at this KBase: http://kbase.gfi.com/showarticle.asp?id=KBID002785. This should guide you to reinstall SQLExpress with all the correct configurations.

Please uninstall completely your SQLExpress server and follow the step by step installation wizard as described in the KBase. Then retry "sqlcmd –L" to confirm that the listing now shows an entry for servername\sqlexpress.

If that works then you can retry configuring the database for EventsManager.
