I'm running NSS 6.0 and the "Last update check" is listed as today but "Last update download" was 10/13/2006.  I know there have been patches released since 10/13/2006.

NSS is looking for updates at: http://www.gfisoftware.com/lnsupdate/lnssprms.cab
Sure enough, the updates in that file was 10/10/2006.

I remember I had a similar problem of not finding updates back in October.  I contacted tech support and I was able to update it the following day.

So how do I get the newest updates?

Hi,

Microsoft have stopped updating supporting MBSA 1.2. This is the system which was used in LANguard N.S.S. version 6 and previous versions. I would recommend that you upgrade to version 7 in order to continue using LANguard N.S.S. for patch management.

More information can be found at http://kbase.gfi.com/showarticle.asp?id=KBID002619

Can I get a free upgrade to 7?  We bought this two years ago so I am not covered in the upgrade protection plan, but a major selling point to us was there was no extra charge for updates.  Apparently, I cannot get any more updates to your software without an upgrade, can I get the upgrade for free?

Otherwise, we'll just switch to WSUS.

Microsoft supposedly stopped supporting it on June 30, 2006.  So how did we get updates in July, August, September, and October?

Excellent point, hskelton.

I get the feeling that GFI can update the file we need, albeit probably manually.  If so, can you do it again?

Indeed, Microsoft had announced that it would have cut support in June.

We kept on monitoring and found that MS did release some updates (not all) in the months indicated.

This month MS did not release any content compatible with the LNSS 6.0 engine.

Was a notification of the discontinuance of updates sent out?  I don't remember receiving anything.

Incidentally, I tried to install a trial of Version 7, but it told me that the trial had already expired.  Can I get a temporary license key until we determine what we're going to do, so I can push out this month's updates?

Thanks for posting that, hskelton.  I was about to try 7 myself just to get this month under way.  I was hoping there might be a trial period but apparently not.

I, too, could use a temporary license key.

Hi,

GFI LANguard Network Security Scanner has a 10 day evaluation period, extendible to 30 days using the key received when registering the product.

This trial will only expire if a version of LANguard Network Security Scanner 7 was already installed on the same machine, previously.

In such cases you will need to install GFI LANguard Network Security Scanner on a different machine, for evaluation purposes.

I upgraded my NSS 6 to NSS 7 but it doesn't seem to complete a scan.  Even when I run a Default scan of the localhost, the only result I get is the NETBIOS names check.  The activity window tells me "COMPLETED SECURITY SCAN FOR MACHINE/RANGE: localhost" but when I try to open a Full Report, it says it cannot because the scan did not complete.  I'm saving results to a SQL2000 server just like I had with NSS 6.

Another error I get is when I try to load a saved scan from the database, it gives me "The application could not open the database!".  I'm not sure it's an error or it's just because I haven't successfully completed a scan.

I'm running MDAC 2.8 and there was only a security update for it available on Windows Update (nothing for Jet Engine showed up).  Even with the security update, I get the same result - only NETBIOS name check.

I tried to re-connect with my SQL server database and NSS7 says it found an NSS6 database and prompts me to upgrade or delete.  I tried both and it says it cannot upgrade or delete the database.  I was using SQL auth on NSS6 so I tried NT auth but same thing - cannot upgrade or delete database.

I fixed it.  For some reason, NSS7 was having problems either upgrading or deleting the NSS6 database which prevents it from creating a database for itself.  I took the old database offline and detached it which enabled NSS7 to create a new database for itself.  It can now scan normally.
