I'm in the process of migrating a client from Exchange 2003 (32-bit) with the latest build of MailEssentials to Exchange 2007 (64-bit) on another server. I've installed MailEssentials x64 (build 20090826) on the new server and have exported my settings from the old one as outlined in http://kbase.gfi.com/showarticle.asp?id=KBID003262 . However, I can't import the settings. Since I'm on Windows Server 2008, I right-click on meconfigmgr.exe and select "Run as Administrator" and start the import process. I get a warning saying to make sure all the GFI services and the IIS Admin service are stopped (which they are), and then I get a message saying "Import aborted". No reason is given. Help, please!

Hmm, no help yet I see.

Uninstall your new ME then try copying your ME directory across from your original server to your new one then do an install, following the instructions in KBID002122. I haven't tried this method with an architecture change, but you can't end up in a worse situation!

You might have to use the Program Files (x86) folder on the new server.

Hi,

I would suggest for this scenario to perform a manual transfer of the configuration as described in the link below:
http://kbase.gfi.com/showarticle.asp?id=KBID002430

In order to do this, first please remove the ME installed in the new server and delete or rename the ME folder and do a new clean install. After the new install is done, follow the kb above which should allow you to transfer most of the configuration to the new server.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll give the manual transfer a try, probably sometime this weekend, and post back here. I'm not too worried about most of the settings since manually recreating them wouldn't be too big a deal, but I definitely want the whitelist! The auto-whitelist is now over 24,000 entries, and we definitely don't want to lose that.

Well, I can't really explain this, but after reinstalling ME, I decided to try importing the settings one more time using the method in my first message. I did a new export from the old server, went to import the settings on the new one, and... it worked! I'm not sure why it didn't work last week but did this week. I can only name two things that I think I did differently:

1. During the ME reinstall process, I made sure to run the installer with the "run as administrator" option. While I didn't get any errors during the installation last week, I don't think I used that option to bypass UAC.

2. The import path was slightly different: a little shorter and with no spaces. I can't see why that would make a difference, but that's the only other item I can think of that was different from last week.

So... it appears the problem is solved. Thanks for the suggestions.

Small addendum to the above: After successfully importing the settings, starting GFI MailEssentials Configuration resulted in an error stating that the SMTP service wasn't installed. But of course it shouldn't be installed because Exchange 2007 is installed with the Hub Transport role!

Solution: I simply uninstalled and reinstalled ME again. The error is gone, and my imported settings remained.
